I'm a graduate student studying analytic philosophy
who loves reading
. Rather than beat around the bush, I'll tell you what I can do for you:
(1)If you're having trouble because you don't know how to go about reading nonfiction and fiction effectively, I can help you by teaching reading comprehension strategies in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. In order to understand history
, philosophy, politics or sociology
, you have to be able to engage critically with the important texts, and the key to doing this is to develop excellent reading comprehension.
(2) If you're not big on reading and wonder why you should bother with it, keep in mind that students who read more do better in school. So, reading effectively is vitally important if you want to understand the world in which you live, and succeed academically. I will teach you the skills to read well, and help foster a love of reading at the same time.
(3) If you're bad at writing papers or essays in English
, I can help you. My emphasis is on clarity and rigor in writing, but we can work on vocabulary
, format, and style, if you need to. Learning to write effective papers will not only help you get better grades, but will also make you a better thinker.
(4) If English is not your first language
, and you want help with reading and writing, I may be able to help you. I have a certificate in teaching ESL
from Oxford Seminars. Just shoot me an email
and explain what you need, and I'll let you know if I can help you.
I've tutored reading now for a number of years, and I have two semesters of classroom teaching experience – I taught Critical Thinking at San Francisco State University. I'm currently finishing up my philosophy MA program, and I have a cumulative GPA of 3.94. If you would like more detailed information about my qualifications, feel free to send me an email.
In order to learn well, it helps a lot to have a friendly, supportive, and relaxed environment. So, that's exactly what I aim for when I'm tutoring. I'm not going to yell at you, or get angry, or express disapproval if you're struggling; I'm patient, cheerful, and calm. We will work on improving your skills, and we will proceed at a pace you're comfortable with.
