Thanks for considering me as your tutor. I like to say that I tutored before tutoring was cool - I put myself through Cal (Physics PhD '98) tutoring innumerable undergrads in physics and math. I continue to enjoy private tutoring along with my professional (daytime) job as a physicist and teaching a course or so a quarter in the Physics department at Cal State East Bay.
Experience more than knowledge is what defines the quality of the tutor. Over the years I have become extremely adept at recognizing when students do not grasp the material and am quick to identify root causes. With physics often the solution simply lies with identifying the underlying misconceptions. With math I find that presenting the problem from as many angles as possible is most helpful.
I really enjoy working with people of all ages and ethnicities. Colleagues, friends and family say that I am outgoing and personable and I believe you will too. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have an Independent Educational Business - Academically Speaking - have a certificate in Independent Educational Consulting for UC Irvine and am a member of three professional organizations in that area. I am presently working with several clients for Fall 3014 placement for both UC, CSU and private colleges.
In acquiring my PhD in Nuclear Engineering I took numerous upper division and graduate classes in math and physics. Concerning math, I have taken and passed courses in differential equations, partial differential equations, calculus on a manifold and group theory.
Differential equations also describe many of the fundamental principles of physics. I have encountered differential equations in courses in modern physics, quantum mechanics, special relativity, electrodynamics, field theory particle physics to name a few.
There are two categories of differential equations: the type that one typically encounters in modern physics and those those confined mainly to math texts. I am very well qualified on the former.
Concerning the latter the techniques used to solve the more difficult cases, e.g., non-linear or inseparable equations, are described in most nearly any undergraduate math text on the topic.
I am a part-time physics instructor at Cal State East Bay, was a TA for six semesters at Cal (7 and 8 series) and tutored dozens of students while while working on my PhD there.
More importantly I love physics and enjoying sharing my deep appreciation of the subject with others!
While working on my PhD in Nuclear Engineering I became preoccupied with all things Russian - literature, culture and language. While a graduate student at Cal I took two undergraduate grammar courses, one conversation and one phonetics course one upper division conversation course and one upper division business course. I believe I got an "A" in all of these courses, except for the upper division conversation course, where I got a "B+". I have a proclivity for languages and speak Spanish (and have passed the requisite WyzAnt test), some German and love linguistics. I have complete command of the 6 conjugations in the language, have mastered the subtleties of the soft and hard signs and am actually a fairly proficient speaker, having traveled twice to Russia, both for extended periods of time. For beginning Russian learners I feel there would be an advantage to having me as a tutor rather than a native speaker for reasons of familiarity with the English language and knowledge of the pitfalls, having had to learn them first hand as a young adult.
