Fowler is an experienced teacher, editor
, writer, doctoral candidate, and publisher. In 2011, he founded Nomadic Press, a literary and arts non-profit with bases in Brooklyn, NY, and Oakland, CA. Since 2013, he has been an adjunct professor at Rutgers University Newark in the sociology
department, where he teaches on topics ranging from the sociology of work to deviance and postcolonialism. He believes that teaching affords an unrivaled opportunity to teach students how to think, rather than what to think. All of his teaching is therefore grounded in experiences in the field where theory is taken from the classroom and applied in the streets. This approach allows students with any learning style the opportunity to find their own way within the field and hopefully see the world askew and anew, if only for a moment.
In addition to the numerous titles edited and published under his editorial guidance, he has edited a University of California Press-accepted book (forthcoming 2015), which details fieldwork conducted by one of his Rutgers colleagues while he was embedded in the lives of Colombian paramilitaries. He believes editing
is an intimate, semantic dance with the voice of the writer. As such, he takes his role as an editor extremely seriously. Simultaneously acting as an editorial guide, a hand to hold, a teacher, a learner, a captain and crew member, and a listener and lingual explorer, he treats the intimacy of editing with the utmost respect that it deserves.
When first moving from Brooklyn to the Bay Area in 2013, he spent the better part of a year as a senior editor tasked with editing hundreds of business
and academic papers, and has fine tuned his editorial skills across numerous style guides ranging from APA to corporation-specific style guides. Since mid-2014, he has been contracted to write a book on the life of an undercover FBI agent that worked for years within the Chicago Mafia and organized crime syndicates in Silicon Valley. He has lived many lives around the world in his 33 years, and looks forward to the lives to come.
He taught English
as a second language
to students in Lesotho, Southern Africa during his two-year term as a secondary education Peace Corps volunteer as well as to students in Costa Rica. Prior to his term as a volunteer, he tutored children (K-12) in Monterey, California, in topics ranging from basic reading
skills to writing
He has extensive experience in using Skype for business-related calls and would feel completely comfortable tutoring through that medium.
