Hello!
I am thrilled that you are interested in looking into academic coaching. Here is some information about my practice and my experience at a tutor:
I have been teaching and tutoring for 5 years now. It is my passion and expertise to show students how contemplation can transform a life. I have been a one-on-one tutor in public and private schools and in the juvenile court system. In 2009, I began holding my own elective courses at El Puente Community School to then become their long-term substitute in the independent studies program for an entire trimester. In 2010, I held a class on composition for freshman at Mills College. Presently, I am a Teacher’s Assistant in a Senior Thesis Class for creative writing at Mills College. I continue to pursue a career in the classroom because I have witnessed my students’ successes.
I believe that all students have the capacity to learn on their own terms. I have seen triumphs in all types of students and classrooms--each of them needed their own pathway to making meaning out of their learning experience. What this means for me as a tutor is, taking the time to know who I am working with. Learning is not just about cramming the mind with information, it is about looking at information and finding yourself within it. I believe that trust, respect, and inspiration are not side effects of a successful learning experience, but instead are the foundation for it. It is this belief that has carried me into my private practice as a writing coach and workshop facilitator. Both writing and learning have the power to heal and teach us how to be critical thinking and compassionate citizens.
