I recently moved to Oakland for graduate school after living/working in Houston, TX for three years. I am currently studying in a masters program in nursing (I will receive my MSN and Family Nurse Practitioner license). While I studied musicology in undergrad, I have since changed my career path to the health sciences. I primarily tutor college (pathophysiology, anatomy/physio, nursing courses), high school math, science and Spanish students, but have also tutored middle school students in the past.
My style tended to be one of encouragement. My primary goal is to nurture a sense of accomplishment and pride in the student, so that they may eventually find themselves engrossed in their studies with little to no need for a tutor. In essence, I try to impart my own passion for learning on the student. Of course the strategy varies with each student: perhaps an athlete student would be better driven by competition, while an artsy child may enjoy discovering that mathematics can really be looked at like a beautiful foreign language.
Outside of math and science, I do also speak/write in German and Spanish and would of course enjoy tutoring in either of those subjects. I grew up speaking Spanish and took some Spanish Lit courses in college, and as for German I studied and worked in Austria for a year and then came back to college where I took a few more semesters of German lit courses.

Juan was such a great help to my sophomore. The weekly sessions with him helped her improve her grade from an "F" to a "B"! He was easy to work with, incredibly knowledgeable, and communicated well with both my daughter and I. We are sad that he's moved to another state, but happy for whomever gets to benefit from his instruction in the future. We highly recommend Juan as a tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored all levels of high school math, but particularly enjoying working with Algebra students. Algebraic math is super useful in various careers, as well as in life activities, and can also just be really fun!
I am currently working on upper division biology coursework, so the subject is fresh in my mind. I look forward to working with you!
