Hello, buenos dias, and bom dia! Thank you for looking at my profile! Here is some information about me:
Santa Cruz, CA
BA in Latin American Studies from the University of San Francisco
MA in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of San Francisco
One semester teaching 3rd, 6th, and 7th grade ESL in El Salvador, Central America
One semester teaching an adult ESL class for parents at an elementary school in San Francisco
Currently teaching adult ESL classes in Berkeley
One year tutoring undergraduate and graduate students in ESL,
One semester tutoring a man who was studying for his US citizenship test (he passed!),
One year tutoring a high school student in Spanish
Active Wyzant tutor since summer 2011
How I Learned Spanish:
I took Spanish 1 through AP in high school (I got a 5 on the AP test) and took a Spanish literature class in college. I lived in El Salvador, Central America, for 5 months, which helped tremendously with my language learning. I maintain my Spanish by staying in touch with friends from El Salvador and speaking Spanish with friends who live here.
How I Learned Portuguese:
I took two semesters of intensive Portuguese in college and then lived in Belo Horizonte, Brasil, for 6 months. I lived with a host family and all of my classes were in Portuguese, so my language abilities grew by leaps and bounds while I was there. Many of the ESL students I teach are Brazilian, so I occasionally get to practice my Portuguese with them.
Other Work Experience:
I'm a seasoned babysitter, so you know I'll be trustworthy, patient, creative, and punctual.
I was a Resident Advisor (supported students in a residence hall) in college, so you know I'll be responsible, caring, and resourceful.
I was an Assistant Hall Director (the RA's boss) as a grad student, so you know I'll be a hard worker, prepared, and able to manage our time together effectively.
Why I'm the BEST TUTOR EVER!:
I truly love working with students one-on-one, and have a lot of experience teaching and tutoring children, youth, and adults. I hate boring grammar drills, so unless you really want to do them, I won't make you. Instead, we'll use language in a way that practices the skill we're working on and is also interesting and authentic. I always ask the people I tutor to set goals, whether that goal is to get an A in a class or to understand a movie without subtitles. I understand how second language acquisition works, and will do everything I can to make your time with me not only productive but also fun!
Thanks for reading over my information, hope to see you soon! Hasta luego and ate mais!
