Greetings! I have been a high school English teacher for the past 5 years in Oakland, CA. I recently moved back to southern California to be closer to family. I taught all forms of basic English courses and well as advanced placement and honors level courses as well. Within these courses I did an ample amount of ACT and SAT practice so I am well aware of the test requirements as well as strategies to help you be as successful as possible. Along with this I am familiar with the college writing process and aid students in the application, scholarship, personal statement and placement test processes when preparing for and entering higher level education. I get to know my students so as to meet them at their needs. I worked with multiple learning styles in the classroom and always did the best that I could to make to make my teaching accessible to all of my students.
For the past 3 years I have worked as an AVID teacher and counselor. Within this role, I have helped schedule courses for students to ensure that they meet the A-G requirements. In this role I have also worked with students on the college application process as well as the transition from high school into college.
I have a single subject teaching credential in English with a certification to teach English as a second language. I have taught CAHSEE preparatory classes to students whose second language is English. Along with this I have taught summer courses through the Oakland Unified School District for English Language Development (ELD) students.
I played soccer since I was 5 years old. For the past 3 years I have been the head women's varsity soccer coach at the high school where I teach.
I work with my students throughout the year in the AVID (advancement via individual determination). This elective course focusing on study skills, which includes multiple modalities in learning new information. I work with my students on making flashcards, Cornell Notes and study groups. I teach them how to prioritize their time and manage their responsibilities along with their academics.
