I love math but I also love working with students to help them attain their goals in math -- goals ranging from understanding algebra or overcoming math anxiety to becoming an expert at problem solving or making a high score on the SAT Math Level 2... and everything in between.
I have tutored hundreds of students over the past 19 years. In addition to teaching the usual high school math subjects and SAT/ACT Math prep, I have experience in working with non-traditional students, homeschoolers, gifted students, and students who have math anxiety. I have taught junior high, high school, and community college, and I have developed and taught high school courses for homeschoolers. I also was a MATHCOUNTS coach for fourteen years and worked with the award-winning Charlotte Math Club for almost 20 years. I am a very patient person and enjoy working with students who have lots of questions about math.
When working with a new student who needs help with a current math course, I figure out, with the student's help, where he or she began to have difficulty in the course, and then work with the student intensively to build a deep understanding of the material so he or she can become successful in the current math course and in future math courses.

I have extensive experience in tutoring Algebra 2, as well as all the other high school math subjects (including Calculus.) Algebra 2 is one of two or three subjects I tutor most frequently. I have worked with students from a wide variety of curricula and various textbooks, and in all sorts of school settings. Algebra 2 courses vary greatly in content and emphasis, and my experience makes it possible for me to help students with any Algebra 2 course. For example, some Algebra 2 courses include Trigonometry and Conic Sections, while others explore Matrices, Linear Programming, and/or Probability and Combinatorics. Almost all Algebra 2 courses cover all the major types of functions that will be encountered in Pre-calculus and Calculus. I have experience with all of these topics and more, and I enjoy assisting students in developing a solid understanding of them.
Geometry is a subject I have been tutoring and teaching for over 20 years. The high school geometry course is the first time that students encounter a mathematical system being constructed in its entirety: Undefined terms, Defined terms, Postulates (or Axioms) and Theorems (including Corollaries). It is also the first course (and sometimes the only course) in which most students encounter formal Proof. Applications of the concepts in geometry are also an integral part of the course. (These applications often involve use of algebra as well.) Some basic Triangle Trigonometry is often, but not always, included in a geometry course.
There are various approaches to the study of geometry, and I am familiar with all of them. I enjoy this subject very much!
Pre-calculus is sometimes considered a non-essential course, but I believe that it is very important to today's math students if they are to succeed at Calculus. It is very similar to Algebra 2, but with more formal language and more depth within every topic. Also, because some of today's Algebra 2 courses do not include all the topics they traditionally did, pre-calculus will help the student to have a complete understanding of functions, trigonometry, and other topics that are crucial to success in Calculus. I have had excellent success with tutoring pre-calculus in a variety of settings and with a variety of textbooks. As with all my tutoring, I treat each student with respect and patience, and I will take the student from wherever he or she is and help him or her to become as successful as possible.
I have extensive experience tutoring math on the high school level (through Calculus) and helping students prepare for the SAT. I have developed a series of problem sets for extra practice in typical areas where students have difficulty on the SAT, and I select from these to tailor my tutoring to the needs of the particular student. I also use the College Board's test prep book with my students. So far the students with whom I have worked on SAT prep have had great results. As a bonus, our practice sessions result in an increased appreciation for and understanding of math.
I have over 20 years of experience helping students with Trigonometry and associated topics such as Logarithms and Vectors. I use both the unit circle and the right triangle approaches to learning about the trigonometric ratios, as appropriate to the situation. Beyond these basic ideas, study of trigonometry has three main parts: identities, in both proofs and equation solving; trig functions and their graphs; and applications of trigonometry. However, often a trigonometry course also includes the study of logarithmic and exponential functions, vectors, and other topics. I am familiar with and have tutored for all of these on countless occasions over the past 20 years, and I enjoy working with students to further their understanding and untangle the knots of confusion that sometimes accompany learning in this area.

I charge $75/hr for a group of two students and $85/hr for three students at the same session, but the rate is per session, not per student, so the students can split the fee.
