In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For many years, I have specialized in working with international college students to improve their English language communications skills, particularly in the areas of writing and speaking. This applies to improving performance in written course work in the form of essays, reports, and other forms of academic composition, as well as boosting oral communication and comprehension ability through exercises in conversation and public speaking.
To stand up in front of a group and talk may sound like a simple task, but it's one that can cause fear and trembling in even the most self-possessed people. Over the years, I've had many opportunities to learn first-hand what works and what doesn't when it comes to speaking in public. In addition to extensive acting training and onstage exeperience, I've made presentations at national academic conferences, and before professional arts, education, and community service organizations with audiences ranging from a handful to a roomful. We will work together to polish the skills required for you to be able to speak in public with poise, calm, and confidence, which includes attention to voice quality, enunciation, projection, facial expression, eye contact and posture, in addition to the essential ingredient for success--mastering the text.
I have been involved in theatre for as long as I can remember, and spent the last eight years as a member of the Artistic Staff for one of the country's leading professional companies. I was trained as an actor and director, and have since concentrated on literary and educational aspects such as dramatizing productions and managing programs for young audiences. This involved reading and studying a broad range of dramatic literature and writing study guides aligned with California state standards in English-Language Arts and History-Social Studies, as well as Visual & Performing Arts. Having worked with scores of accomplished actors, directors, playwrights, designer and artisans, I'm uniquely qualified to help you master all manner of theatrical skills, whether you're working on a scene for acting class, tackling your first play writing assignment, or trying to make sense of Shakespeare.
My professional and academic experience as a writer, editor and proofreader has given me not only a love of language but also the depth of knowledge required to help others improve their own writing ability. In order to encourage students to find their own voices as writers, I work with them every step of the way from first through final draft to learn how to organize their thoughts and express themselves with clarity, simplicity and confidence, while also helping them develop basic skills such as spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.
