I am an innovative and enthusiastic educator who has lived and taught in many countries as well as at multiple grade levels. My experience includes working with elementary immigrants and Somali refugees in Columbus, Ohio, and extensive work in Malaysia and Japan where I taught exam preparation courses for college students and adults. Additionally, I was responsible for the conceiving and implementation of the Young Learner program at the British Council, Penang. I emphasize critical thinking and problem solving skills, community, interdependence and independence. This diverse background has given me a strong sense of responsibility for establishing community, both immediately and globally, and extensive hands-on experiences with the many needs of students from different backgrounds.
Students come to me with different experiences and unique areas of expertise, so my students and their needs, interests, and strengths are at the core of every lesson that I teach. I do this vis-a-vis my connection with my students and my understanding of the needs of learners. By using quality children’s literature and research-proven methodologies such as Lucy Calkin's Reading and Writing Workshop and Fountas and Pinnell Balanced Literacy, students remain engaged and progress in their learning. Both my education and my professional experiences attest to the fact that students do best when immersed in a stimulating, engaging and task oriented learning environment. Teaching children continues to inspire me and reinforces my commitment to my students’ futures and their current needs. It is my ongoing goal to research, explore and create innovative lessons to better assist these learners as a group and as individuals; I strive for and succeed in my efforts to provide my students with dynamic lessons.
My greatest strengths are my interpersonal skills and positive attitude. While my standards and expectations are high, my students trust me and know that I am dedicated to their emotional and psychological wellbeing, but also to their academic success. By incorporating their interests and demonstrating direct connections to what is happening in their lives, I am able to get my students as excited about learning as I am. I am always friendly and approachable and strive to collaborate and build rapport with my students and their families. I see us all as a team working for the students’ success. I am flexible and able to work creatively within given parameters, independently or as a member of a team. I have a “We can get it done” attitude. Additionally, I am very adaptable and proactive about any and all challenges that may arise.
