My name is Jenelle and I am a current hearing ASL student at SRJC and BCC. I have been studying American Sign Language for 3 years, and have been involved in the Deaf community since I entered my first ASL class. I currently volunteer at DCARA, a Deaf center in the East Bay and privately interpret for a few people. Let me state I am not fluent, though advanced enough to do my best to interpret and comfortably get by in the community.
My approach is, in my opinion, one of the best ways to go when studying and learning sign. Voice off. If a student has not taken one class then I make exceptions and use voice to ensure the student is not lost or confused. I have learned patience and encouragement throughout the years of studying with and tutoring other ASL students. I also enjoy sharing information about the Deaf community and Deaf culture as this is an incredibly important aspect in this field and subject.
If you or your child is looking for a dedicated, passionate and encouraging tutor then please reach out and ask for help. The more to learn and enjoy sign, is another opportunity to be apart of something incredible!
American Sign Language (ASL) is the predominant language used by deaf communities in the United States as well as parts of Canada. I have been studying ASL for 3 years and am advanced enough to have been tutoring since my first year, involving myself in the Deaf community as well as interpreting for private parties. Although I must specify that I am not fluent I find great joy in sharing this culture and language with others willing to learn. I mainly tutor VOICE OFF unless accommodations are needed as I have found this is the best way to learn a language not involving speech and I have, most of the time, only been taught in this manner. Along the way I also add bits of information whenever necessary regarding Deaf culture as this is an incredibly important aspect in this subject. It is taught in ASL classes from day 1. I am planning on transferring to receive my BA next year in ASL Interpreting. If one is willing to learn, I am willing to share this beautiful language and pass on what has been taught to me.
