I recently graduated from University of California, Santa Barbara with a Bachelor's degree in Communication, with a Minor in English. I worked as a peer health educator for UCSB Health & Wellness program. I enjoyed teaching others about positive psychology and healthy lifestyle practices. I currently work as a private tutor, helping to bring young students to their full academic potential. I enjoy helping others and working towards the betterment of my community.

I believe in tailoring lesson plans to the individual student. By finding their dominant learning style and academic strengths, we can work together to build upon weaknesses and achieve success. Positive reinforcement and one-on-one attention provided by a tutor can help raise the student's self-esteem, allowing him/her to grow scholastically.

Most of my experience is in tutoring children ages 7-16. I can teach in all subjects for the elementary student, up to 8th grade. I have a special passion for the English language, and can teach up to college level in language-related subjects. I am able to tutor on school days and/or weekends. If you choose to schedule multiple sessions a week, I would be happy to offer a discount on my hourly rate. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

College Counseling

While in high school, I applied for and was accepted into six universities. I had a college counselor who mentored me, and have been informed on what top qualities college admissions are looking for. With this knowledge and strategy planning, I have successfully assisted previous students to get into universities such as UCLA and UC Berkeley.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experience tutoring children from kindergarten, up through eighth grade. We have covered all elementary subjects, including math, history, spelling, language arts, and more. I start with a pre-assessment test, then tailor a lesson plan to suit the needs of each student. I believe my dedication to helping students find confidence and joy in learning makes me a positive influence as well as a qualified tutor at any grade level.

Phonics

I have taken a linguistic course in college, where I studied phonetics. I also have experience teaching a child phonics. We covered an entire workbook on the subject. I found the mastering of phonics to be instrumental in his progress in the subjects of spelling and reading. I encourage students struggling in English subjects to study the pronunciation of words, to help them sound out words and gain confidence in their own ability to master the English language.

Public Speaking

I was a peer health educator at my university for two years. Part of my internship work including facilitating 60-90 minute presentations with an average attendance of 20-60 people. In my volunteer work for Relay For Life (a fundraising program for cancer research), I organized weekly meetings for 30+ team captains. I also presented awards at our Relay event, in front of an audience of over 500 people.

Reading

I have experience tutoring children to help improve their reading comprehension. As an avid reader, I try to encourage my students to try and find excitement for the written word. I believe allowing children read a mixture of different genres will help them find what speaks to them.

SAT Reading

I have taken an SAT prep course while enrolled in high school. I received a score of 630 when I took the SAT, which is in the 87 percentile. I also have experience assisting peers in preparing for the SAT test. I helped a girl to achieve a 110-point improvement upon her second attempt of the test.

Spanish

I have roughly 20 years of experience engaging with the Spanish language. I learned Spanish at a very early age, because I am part of a Cuban heritage. My grandmother struggles with English, so she taught me to communicate with her in her native language. Also, I was enrolled in the Spanish Honors courses in high school, for advanced students like myself. I took an upper level Spanish course in college as well. I continue to practice my language skills weekly, in tutoring a young man and conversing with my grandma while I am visiting her.

Spelling

Upon graduation from my primary education, I received an award for excellence in spelling. I have a year's experience in teaching spelling to students. Also, I have numerous academic workbooks that can serve as helpful resources to my students.

Writing

I have years of experience writing scholarly essays. I successfully completed multiple college courses in academic writing. I also have experience tutoring in this subject. I have helped a young boy to improve his writing skills by two grade levels in just a few short months. The encouragement and a positive attitude, provided by a tutor such as myself, are essential to raising a child's confidence in writing.
