COOP/HSPT

I have tutored several students for the HSPT during the last six years as an independent tutor with a tutoring agency. I have worked with kids from fifth grade through eleventh grade, and I have helped students to feel more at ease and improve their score if they are retaking the test. I work with each student on practice exercises from test preparation books to help build their skills in reading comprehension, math, and vocabulary. I also have them take timed practice tests so that they will get accustomed to the test-taking environment. I patiently work with each student to find the teaching method that works best for the individual.

Drums

I have been playing drums for about 17 years and percussion for about 13 years. I play drum set, congas, timbales, and bata drums. I have also studied classical piano and guitar, but drums are my passion. I have a Master of Music degree in Afro-Latin Music. I am a drum instructor for the Boys and Girls Club Arts Academy, and I teach drums and percussion privately. Because I love learning and growing as a musician and person, I still take lessons on drum set (with world-renown drummer Chris Coleman) and percussion (with legendary Cuban drummer, singer, and dancer Lazaro Galarraga). With each student I work with, my experience, patience, adaptability, and creativity allow me to teach in a manner that best suits each student's needs.

English

I specialize in English for test preparation, as well as essay writing, grammar, and literature. I also have extensive research experience.

ISEE

I have tutored dozens of students for the ISEE during the last six years as an independent tutor with a tutoring agency. I have worked with kids from fifth grade through eleventh grade, and I have helped students to feel more at ease and improve their score if they are retaking the test. I am very familiar with the format and scoring system of the test. I have an ISEE teacher's guide that goes over every skill needed for the test, and I can recommend additional study materials.

SAT Reading

I have a lot of experience tutoring for test preparation. I have a SAT manual that I can use for our sessions, and I can also recommend more material that can be purchased online or at a bookstore for additional practice.

SAT Writing

I have extensive experience tutoring for test preparation, and writing. I have an SAT manual, and I can also recommend additional materials for more practice.

Spanish

I have a Bachelor's degree in Spanish, I have studied abroad, and I speak, read, and write Spanish fluently.

Swimming

I was on swim team in high school and college. I have been a lifeguard and have taught swimming lessons since 2001. I am certified in First Aid, CPR, and I am an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). For swimming lessons, I am in the water with the child so that I can demonstrate, watch their stroke underwater, and provide the highest level of safety and comfort.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
