My name is Erika and in December 2012 I graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA. I majored in Comparative Literature and minored in Russian. I wrote my Senior Honors Thesis in Literature and Film-- I got an A on my research and presentation of my thesis, which satisfied the Honors credit of my BA. I am currently applying to graduate schools and I hope to begin work on my Ph.D. in Fall 2014. I plan on pursuing a career as a professor of literature. I am also in the process of getting my creative writing published in various literary magazines.
Reading and writing are my two biggest passions. I would love to help others share in my love of reading, writing, and English. I'm a very patient person who is excellent with children. I babysat for years and volunteered for my church's summer camp-- kids love me! I am planning on spending the rest of my life working with literature; to be able to help children foster a love of reading and learning would be truly rewarding work that I would love to be involved with.
I wrote my senior honors thesis on literature and film. I had to do film research for an entire semester prior to writing my thesis. I went to the University of Southern California, which has one of (if not the) best film programs in the world. I took three film classes at USC in addition to the independent film/literature research course I took. I have also been on camera so I know about both sides of the lens, as they say.
I'm qualified to teach study skills because I have exceptional organizational skills. I know the importance of balancing a schedule, which is key; in order to study properly, you need to make sure your student has adequate study time to divide between subjects. I have experience tutoring study methods with young adults, as I helped my sister and other children I used to babysit. I believe the foundation of building study skills depends on list-making and division of time. When you teach students how to divide their schoolwork into "chunks," large assignments become manageable and it's easier to focus on one item on his or her Homework List at a time.
I attended both a middle school and a high school for the arts-- I was a theatre major for seven years. I had to take classes in acting (including Shakespearean, classical, and method acting), scenic design/architecture, costume design, directing/blocking, text analysis, and sound engineering. I worked primarily in technical theatre but I have tons of acting experience as well. My former high school, Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, is consistently ranked as one of the best high schools in the country. To attend both the middle and high schools of the arts, I had to audition to gain acceptance. I am well-versed in all the aspects of theatre and I feel very comfortable teaching students about theatre.
