I have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and I am currently working towards my Master's at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences at Claremont Graduate University. I am an experienced tutor who has helped countless college students with algebra, trigonometry, calculus, statistics and more. I also tutor middle school and high school level math, including SAT preparation. Students enjoy working with me because I am clear in my explanations. Every person learns differently and when a student is struggling to understand a concept, I always find a way to explain it so that it clicks with that particular individual.
One of my favorite clients was a woman in her early thirties who had recently returned to school for a nursing degree. She hadn't taken a math class in over 10 years and was struggling with basic algebra. When she came to me at the beginning of the semester she had failed her first test and was hoping to simply pass the class. Over the course of the semester, she consistently got good grades on her homework and tests and actually finished with an A- in the class. The best part was when she came to me afterwards and said "Never in my life did I think I would get an A in a math class. Thank you!" When I hear a student say something like that, I realize how great this job is. I love mathematics and I love teaching it to people, especially when they swear they are terrible at math and "beyond help." I always prove them wrong!
I also teach chess. I have been playing competitively since I was six years old. When I started high school, I began teaching in after-school programs and in summer camps. Nothing makes me happier than teaching someone who loves chess and is eager to improve their game.

Rachel's subjects
Algebra 1
I have taught a high school summer Algebra 1 course. I have also tutored students of all ages (middle school, high school and college) needing help in Algebra 1.
Algebra 2
As a private tutor, I have worked with many students to improve their Algebra 2 skills. I also taught two sections of an Algebra 2 class for a summer high school program. Each section had over 20 students.
Calculus
I've tutored students in Calculus III and have been very successful. It's not an easy subject for a lot of people and my goal when working with a student is to make the topics as simple as possible.
Statistics
My specialty is statistics - it's what I'm studying in graduate school. I enjoy the subject and I am good at teaching it. I've worked with many students on elementary statistics and they have done well!
Chess
I have been playing chess competitively since the age of six. I am a member of the US Chess Federation, rated 1773. I've taught chess for over 10 years, primarily to young children. Most recently, I taught a 1st grade class at the Melrose School in Brewster, NY. I have also worked with adults, usually in one-on-one sessions.
Discrete Math
I received an A in my undergraduate discrete math course. I also took a graduate level discrete mathematical modeling course. I have tutored students in set theory, logic and basic number theory.
Linear Algebra
I received an A in Introduction to Linear Algebra at Western CT State University. In my graduate courses, we have often used more advanced linear algebra. I have also tutored students in linear algebra.
Logic
I did very well in the logic portion of my discrete mathematics course. Logic is a topic that comes very easily to me and I am very good at explaining it to people.
