My name is Allison M. and I am very excited to tell you that I have recently decided to become an elementary school teacher, and I am currently in the process of applying to CSUN's teacher credentialing program. I found myself on this new career path after becoming a tutor, where I realized how much I enjoy working with children, and watching them learn.
My methods are simple. I find that the reason most children struggle with certain subjects is less about poor understanding, and more about a lack of confidence. The first time a child has difficulty understanding something it can be very upsetting, causing him or her to become less motivated, or even defeated by the subject. Because of this, the child will be less inclined to try harder to understand whatever it is he or she is struggling with. As a former cheerleader, I work to inspire children with the confidence they need. I want my students to feel as though they can understand anything if they just look at it a little differently, and that nothing is beyond their reach.
When tutoring your student, I will do my best to understand their learning style and adapt our lessons accordingly. Children are like snowflakes; no two children learn in the same way. Some children are more visual, where others are more auditory in their learning abilities. I will also provide my students with study skills and tricks they can use to retain better what they learn in class, and in our tutoring sessions.
I have experience tutoring both Language Arts, and Math for elementary school age children. After working with my students for only a few weeks, they have all come to our sessions excited to tell me stories from their teachers about their progress and improvement. It is so rewarding to know that I have restored their excitement about learning!
