Elementary Students - College Freshmen
Both English and Spanish are fun languages to learn (once you learn how to handle them). As an English major and Spanish Language Journalism minor, I have been studying both for quite some time and love to share my viewpoints on how to better understand these with students.
In high school and in college, I was the student who got excited about writing papers. When my friends got frustrated or caught writer's block, I was the one willing to help them piece their ideas together. I believe in teaching, not giving answers. I'm an avid reader so I also use literature as an example for different essay topics or vocabulary words.
I've edited work for my university newspaper, a semester literary magazine, as well as countless student essays throughout my undergraduate career, and worked as a Peer Advisor Mentor for three years. I've worked with students ranging from Kindergarten to Freshman College Students so I have experience working with students of all ages and backgrounds. For me, repetition is key and a knowledge of the fundamentals is important, so if the student has a weakness in a certain area, I have no problem helping the student review the material as well as help them learn different ways of handling and retaining the material.
I am a native Spanish speaker and am fluent in both speaking and writing the language. Through my Spanish Journalism Minor I have taken several courses not only in Spanish grammar but also in Spanish literature and I find both enjoyable to tutor. Accent marks are the hardest to catch onto but again, with practice, and an understanding of the rules with examples, it makes it easier for students to remember. The Spanish writers are some of my favorite to read as well, so Gabriel Garcia Marquez might become the students' favorite author by the time I'm done helping them.
I am currently working with Canyon News in the editing, writing and reporting departments and this has also strengthened my writing skills and proofreading abilities. If the student is interested in Journalism or needs helping writing reports or essays in any other school subjects, including Geography, History or Life Skills, this is also one of my major strengths.
I've taken countless time management, study skills, and test preparedness courses in college and will be able to share these with your students.
I'm patient, empathetic, and understanding, qualities which also led me to pursue a future graduate career in Social Work and demonstrates my reason for working with students.
