I look forward to listening on what your needs would be for the tutoring session. As a deaf person who functions as a hard of hearing person, I have been signing actively for 13 years and am fluent in American Sign Language. I speak and sign very clearly, in fact, I have volunteered teaching corps members at an adult school in Northern CA for under a year. Exposed to cultural exchanges in various parts of the world, I enjoy sharing moments to mark the information as part of the learning experience with the one being tutored. With a BFA degree in Fine Arts Studio, I would love to go over form techniques and skills in areas of 2D and 3D. As of now, I work part-time a a Project Coordinator for a literacy nonprofit and have a flexible schedule. Email me at anytime and I shall be quick with a reply.

Thank you and with peace,
Jamie

Hard Of Hearing

I was born profoundly deaf and went to a private school to learn how to speak and hear. At age 7, I received my cochlear implant surgery and have since then have had vast improvements in speech and sound. My identity is in both the hearing and deaf worlds as I have been often by clueless people at different kinds of certain moments to be either hearing, hard of hearing or deaf. Having used sign language interpreters and note-takers in college, I thrived on and have tutored in ASL to people of various streams and settings (i.e. adult school at night, one-on-one service, and daily social interaction). There was a wonderful study abroad program I attended at the Sienna Institute of Liberal Arts at Italy for 3 weeks where there was a Deaf Adults Language immersion program to interact with deaf Italians and acquire their language.

Painting

My college paintings in oils, acrylic and watercolor have been exhibited at the senior Fine Arts Studio show in Rochester, New York. I have painted from models, still life and photos in either black/white and color. My understanding of composition, color theories, shadows, pressure points, aesthetics, preparing a canvas/paper is well balanced. I will show the student how the mind process goes from start to end to bring the goal of the work into visual form. I have taught underprivileged children and communicated with peers on constructive criticism when providing feedback at all moments through their creative process.

Sign Language

Sign Language is different than American Sign Language (ASL). International Sign Language (ISL) is different than ASL. I learned Italian Sign Language (not ISL, but LIS), and have been out of practice. I am fluent in gesturing due to my skills in keying with the other's social body language. You shall find my fluency in ASL due to my ability to remove English from my mind and focus expressing grammar through facial expressions and know of varied dialects in signs. I have been exposed to D/deaf people from all over the USA (ie: NY, NJ, PA, MD, WA DC, FL, KS, IL, AL, TX, AZ, OR, and CA). I have conversed in sign language mixtures in Italy and India due to language exchanges. India's sign language is mostly influenced from British Sign Language (makes sense due to history) and ASL. Interestingly, more people in the world are more familiar with ASL than with ISL--just like the world's common spoken language is English, other than music and peace. I have been signing since I was 15. I learned formally in a small private school for 1 year in 10th grade and moved to a school where I began the use of sign language interpreters in 11th grade due to being in large public classrooms. As a deaf person who grew up with hearing aids, I communicated orally and auditory, which is common for the upbringing of most deaf children who are born to hearing parents. Once I learned ASL, I learned Spanish for the first time in 11th grade with the sign language interpreter who mouthed the Spanish and signed in sign language with Spanish grammar order. As you may be surprised, Spanish and ASL are similar in grammar order structure. One would find that I would be very experienced in my background experiences with language. Note that I also speak and sign clearly at the same time, which is a skill that is difficult, yet accomplished with extraneous effort over time...this is called SimCom (aka simultaneous communication). ASL is recognized as a foreign language in most educational locations in USA. To tutor in sign language is possible with anyone, though each learner is different. I have discovered through various social experiences with different people (i.e.: at work, in the classroom, in extracurriculars, etc.) that there are ways to teach to the auditorial, visual, and kinetic learner successfully.
