Hi, I’m John. Being a life-long learner, I love to learn and teach many subjects especially those related to science. I started my academic career in architecture and civil engineering and received a Masters degree in civil engineering. For most of my professional career I worked as an aerospace engineer on the Space Station. Wanting to learn more about science, I obtained a second Bachelors degree in physics. I have worked in multiple areas including structural design, advanced spacecraft design, database design, and programming.

When I was a graduate student I taught engineering Statics, Dynamics, and Strength of Materials classes.

I find that learning and teaching the fundamentals of physics, math, and engineering are the most enjoyable and hope that I can help you achieve a good understanding of these subjects.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Civil Engineering

I have a B.S.E and M.S.E in Civil Engineering from Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona. As a graduate student, I had full responsibility for teaching Engineering Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics. And I also taught an Introduction to Engineering Class as well as a Mechanics of Materials Class. The emphasis for my Master's degree was structural engineering. Professionally I was a structural designer and systems engineer in the aerospace industry for 15 years. I also hold a B.S in Physics from the University of California, Irvine, California.

Mechanical Engineering

I have a B.S.E and M.S.E in Civil Engineering from Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona. As a graduate student, I had full responsibility for teaching Engineering Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics. And I also taught an Introduction to Engineering Class as well as a Mechanics of Materials Class. The emphasis for my Master's degree was structural engineering and also included a number of mechanical engineering courses. Professionally I was a structural designer and systems engineer in the aerospace industry for 15 years. I also hold a B.S in Physics from the University of California, Irvine, California.

Microsoft Access

As part of my job at The Boeing Company in systems engineering, I created four database applications using MS Access. These applications included a knowledge management database, a EVA Analysis database, a Flight Log Database, and a Test and Verification Database. These included using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and Structured Query Language (SQL). I also created databases that were web based using Adobe ColdFusion, Adobe Flash and Adobe remoting.

The potential energy of the pinecone before it drops is mgh (given the ground is used as the zero potential energy reference). After if falls the energy is all kinetic energy or (1/2)mv^2 Equating these gives v^2 = 2gh. Note that you can now determine the energy loss due to air friction by the difference...
