The basics: I have a graduate degree in mathematics as well as fifteen years experience teaching the subject. My greatest strides with students have been for courses where several concepts are brought together (geometry, algebra2, pre-calculus, trigonometry, number theory) and there is a need for a deeper level of conceptual understanding. My strong background in education has also given me the tools to help remedial students "catch up" to grade level in addition to learning how to overcome common math anxiety issues.

I have always been a strong believer in the Socratic method and using problem solving (attack skills) methodology to increase student performance and understanding. I believe students learn more effectively by doing and seeing than by "being told" that something works.

Algebra 1

This is a course I have over a decade experience teaching and tutoring. While assisting and clarifying what is being covered in the students classroom tends to be a part of each session, I also have the means to cover central topics (factoring, graphing, solving/simplifying) for a stronger conceptual understanding. A frequent stumbling block for Algebra 1 students is being able to make connections across the central topics of the course.

Prealgebra

The intention of placing a student in Prealgebra is to strengthen computational skills and the basic mechanics of solving/simplifying before taking a more rigorous Algebra 1 course. Since these are generally middle school aged students I am more likely to use manipulatives and game based activities to strengthen number fluency. This is also a good level to teach some basic math study skills.

Study Skills

In addition to my years of experience helping students set up individualized study plans, I have formal training in gap analysis as it pertains to the field of education. Depending on the maturity level of the student and the content area in question I introduce them to either the SQR3, MURDER, or ADDIE models to self-assess while developing a long term plan.
