English and Writing Teacher, ESL and SAT Coach

I have extensive experience in tutoring. My tutoring experience began when we decided to home school all four of our own children. I taught all four of them how to read, using pure phonics. I taught my own children for a total of 23 years (from Kindergarten through high school). All four received college scholarships. The oldest is now in Law school at N.Y.U, and the youngest was recently accepted at Carnegie Melon. The tutoring approach is extremely effective in teaching academics and critical thinking.

In addition, I have tutored individual students and groups of students, in English, writing, literature, critical thinking, SAT preparation and public speaking. To do this, I applied the skills I learned in teaching my own children. I also developed a multi-disciplinary method of teaching to keep English and writing classes relevant and interesting. I found that personal attention and guidance will motivate the student. I have also coached my students through the reading and essay portions of the SAT, and helped them to write effective essays when applying for college entrance and college scholarships.

Vocabulary

A good vocabulary is one of the keys to good writing. Vocabulary is best learned from reading and studying great literature. In addition, a student's vocabulary can be improved through the knowledge and application of Greek and Latin roots, and through looking at the context of a word. Words are like paints in the paint box, and the greater one's vocabulary, the better one is able to master the art of good writing. I look for fun and creative ways to teach vocabulary.

Grammar

I specialize in teaching English grammar. A working knowledge of English grammar is fundamental to good writing, and to good public speaking. Learning good grammar will also improve one's critical thinking skills. Reading

Reading is a foundational skill. Good readers will become good writers. I can help your child achieve their academic goals by improving their reading comprehension. This is accomplished by encouraging the student to read more consistently and by showing them the fundamental organization of literary passages. Once a child understands literary organization, they will be able to write from literature. This process will also improve grammar, vocabulary and syntax (sentence structure).

Writing

I teach English in a logical, step-by-step procedure, which can be easily understood and reproduced. I specialize in teaching writing and critical thinking skills. Writing becomes enjoyable once the student learns how to voice their own thoughts and opinions. A good writer always has a platform from which he/she can effectively enhance and improve the culture. When one learns how to write, one learns how to think.

English

English is one of my favorite subjects for many reasons. The English language is a valuable resource. English is spoken, written, and read throughout the world. Therefore, a person who is proficient in English will find many opportunities open to her or him. This will increase success. SAT Reading

I am an experienced tutor, and I have prepared many students for the SAT and ACT reading and writing tests. I can help your student to dramatically improve his or her score, and I can also teach your student important test-taking strategies which will minimize test anxiety.

Elementary Math

Math can be fun. Let me help your student master the principles of elementary math. I home schooled our four sons from K-12. All are proficient in math and science, because they mastered the basics of math at a young age. My youngest son went on to take calculus in the 8th grade, and then attend DeVry University in Fremont as a high school student. This kind of success can be achieved, when the student first masters the basics. Let me help your student do the same.

Elementary (K-6th)

I home schooled all four of our children from K-12 through the Independent Study Program at Fremont Christian Schools. I taught all four of our children how to read, using phonics. I also taught them all of the subjects in the K-6 curriculum, under the Fremont Christian Independent Study Program.

Phonics

Because we are a home schooling family, I taught all four of our own children how to read and write using phonics (rather than the whole word or sight-reading method where students usually are guessing). Study Skills

From 2002-2009 I taught Study Skills patterned after the Teaching Company's "Super-Star" Student Curriculum to groups of 12-17 high school students. I wrote my own hand-outs and developed my own original approach to the subject.

Public Speaking

From 2002-2009, I taught public speaking classes to groups of home schooled high school students.

CBEST

The CBEST exam is one of the requirements for obtaining a teaching credential, and also for substitute teaching in CA. I took and passed the CBEST exam in 2010, in preparation for a teaching credential program. . However, I decided to work as a professional tutor rather than teach in the classroom. My experience taking and passing the CBEST, combined with 23 years of homeschooling (K-12) and tutoring (K-12) makes me uniquely qualified to teach others how to pass the CBEST exam.

Dyslexia

I have two years of experience tutoring dyslexic students using the Barton method. I have been trained by Christina Clark at Walnut Grove and Valley View Elementary School in the Pleasanto Unified School District. Pleasanton Unified has a site license for the Barton method, and Mrs. Clark has personally trained me to use the program, which teaches a systematic decoding method which applies phonics to reading and spelling.
