Hello and thank you for stopping by my profile!

Allow me to tell you a little more about myself:

I am an experienced educator with an MA in TESOL from the University of Southern California's Rossier School of Education and a BA in Mandarin Chinese and Linguistics from the University of California at Davis. Presently, I teach ESL at a community college. Previously, I have also taught online, overseas, and conducted one-on-one tutoring. I am willing to work with students of all ages.

While education is a discipline, I believe that language education must be flexible and fun in order to be most effective. I encourage students to explore language and find ways to make it relatable to their lives. The use of music, games and art in language acquisition is invaluable!

Thank you for taking time to learn more about my teaching and tutoring services. I look forward to connecting with you, soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

In Summer 2008, I began studying Mandarin Chinese at UC Davis. I continued for two more years, totally three academic years of Mandarin study. Additionally, I made two study abroad trips to Taiwan, totaling approximately seven months that I lived there.

I studied simplified characters during my initial two years of Chinese, but switched to traditional characters the first time I studied in Taiwan. Ever since, I've used traditional characters. However, I can generally read simplified characters, as well.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is not a reason to stop fighting! Speaking as someone who has family members with dyslexia, I know from experience that it will not stop anyone from doing well in school and having a wonderful career! My goal is to give you the practice and strategies you need to manage dyslexia successfully! I offer dyslexia tutoring using the Susan Barton Reading and Spelling System. All students need to begin at Level 1, even if they have previous dyslexia tutoring. (With the exception that they have already begun the Barton system, in which case, we will begin where they left off.)

English

In school, English was one of my favorite subjects! I love language and enjoy helping others find the excitement in studying this language.

ESL/ESOL

As TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is my Masters degree focus, I enjoy working with students who are studying English for business, employment or personal interest.

Grammar

Grammar can be complicated and boring, but it doesn't have to be! Let's work together to improve your knowledge of grammar and your confidence in using it!

Literature

Some of my favorite English classes have been literature classes! It's so much fun to read and then discuss and dissect the material! Another great feature of literature is that there are so many genres. Sooner or later, you are bound to find one that you prefer.

Proofreading

I have done a great deal of proof-reading, both for native English speakers, as well as individuals learning English. From junior high to graduate levels, I have experience proof-reading sentences, paragraphs, short and long essays.

Reading

Reading is an art. When reading for academic purposes, it helps to have some tools in your English "toolbox" that will help you to become an observant reader.

This blog post strays away from the typical subject of education, and into the "nitty-gritty" of the tutoring business. I wanted to clearly explain my cancellation policy for all my students, both current and future. As of March 12, 2013, I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. This means that I require my students (or their parents/guardians/host family) to give me one day's notice... read more

Recently, as I've been working with students on reading, I noticed something interesting. Students tend to want to read the material quickly, whether or not the word is being read correctly. This presents in two different ways that I have noticed so far: If it is a new word, the letters and syllables might get read out of order. If it is a root word, verb or noun, they are already familiar with,... read more

Great teacher! — I'm from Switzerland and it was great having Katelyn 3 hours every day. We worked on my English and I sure improved in two weeks. She is very talented and has many ideas to help you. She is very patient, nice and explains very well. Her vocabulary is very rich and her way of explaining very clear. I also liked when she suggested to work with songs, since she likes music. She came with all kinds of ...
