My formal education is in the fields of linguistics, anthropology, technical writing and editing, and crime and intelligence analysis. I am an English as a second language instructor, as well as a certified crime and intelligence analyst. I recently returned to teaching after having worked as a crime analyst for a local Sheriff's department for two years. I currently teach ESL at a community college.
I have worked in various fields, including the software industry and assistive technology (special needs population). I have experience working with diverse groups of people of all ages. My students have described me as a patient, caring, and an excellent instructor. I have also taught vocational ESL, and I incorporate technology in my teaching. I am fluent in Spanish, as it was my first language. I learned English when I started elementary school. I also formally studied French and Russian. I know what it's like to learn a second language.
As a crime analyst, I used Photoshop on a daily basis in order to create professional looking flyers and crime bulletins. Using Photoshop allowed me to enhance images, particularly when I had to use still shots from surveillance video. Using Photoshop was a required skill in my job, and I used it extensively.
As a crime analyst, I used Excel extensively to sort and analyze crime stats. I also use it currently to compile my student attendance hours.
I have created many PowerPoint presentations, using animation, as well as inserting media such as videos. I have used PowerPoint for facilitating public speaking presentations as well was for illustrating important points in business meetings or trainings.
My formal educational background is in linguistics. I am familiar with the importance of building phonemic awareness, to help children learn how to read. I also teach ESL at a community college, and I use multiple strategies to teach pronunciation and letter recognition. I use activities, such as rhyming, tongue twisters, and minimal pairs.
I have over eight years of teaching experience, and I can help students to focus on the areas that may need work so that they can incorporate good study skills for their own style of learning. I can help with organizational skills, note-taking skills, and other strategies that will help to maximize learning. I also have experience working at a school district in assistive technology to help students with disabilities.
