It is my belief that there is a greater potential within all of us to learn any subject than we realize. My experience has taught me that once a person learns the "how to" of any subject, they are able to move forward confidently. My goal is to empower my students, giving them the skills and tools necessary to succeed. I teach my students how to overcome fear of failure. By doing so they will be able to better meet their academic goals.

I am a retired teacher. My major areas were Secondary (High School) Science and Mathematics. However during my 25+ years of teaching I have experience in teaching at all levels from elementary through college.

My approach to tutoring starts by finding out what the student knows and can do. By doing this I can help my students build from their current knowledge and have confidence to overcome problems while gaining mastery of new skills. My goal is to teach my students "How to Learn" so they can apply that skill to any subject.

Algebra 1

American History

I am a student of history. In fact it is a hobby of mine to study and connect history to current events. I have a personal Black History reference page with links to information on African American History and research.

American History to me is one of the most interesting subject there is. The fact that it is about making one nation from many people of diverse backgrounds, faiths, races, and ethnicity is something that I find fascinating, and worthy of study.

Biology

The focus in Biology is mainly on the cell and its functions.

What the students needs to know and understand in biology includes: how to determine if something is "alive"; the similarities and differences between the different forms of living things; how living things are classified [taxonomy]; the chemical functions of cells [primarily photosynthesis and respiration]; growth and reproduction [mitosis and meiosis]; and the role of RNA & DNA.

Calculus

Calculus is the culmination of basic mathematics. It applies the concepts learned in and understood in earlier math classes to grow a deeper knowledge of numbers, pattern recognition, and problem solving.

Chemistry

My focus in helping students understand chemistry is in the relationship of the mole to all aspects of chemistry. Mass-Mole relationship and conversions are mandatory for the ability to function and have any understanding of the subject.

Language & Math and their link is a key element for Chemistry students to be able to write correct chemical compounds, balance chemical equations, and derive mass and mole outcomes from given problems [Stoichiometry].

Geometry

I have tutored students in Geometry for more than 30 years. I have found that the key to mastering this subject is for the student to connect to some key concepts.

Reading is the key to understanding all other subjects. The ability to read and comprehend makes all learning possible. Regardless of the subject, without the ability to read and comprehend additional learning cannot occur.

Trigonometry

I have taught trigonometry as a course to college students and tutored students in it at all levels.

Trigonometry literally means "triangular measurement". Trigonometry involves the unique relationships [functions] between sides and angles of triangles.

It is my belief that understanding that Trigonometry is the study of the unique ratio of sides for each angle of a triangle is the main thing that is needed for a student to master a course in Trig.

Astronomy

Classic Astronomy is the study of the stars and space. Today with a greater understanding of Physics, Astronomy has exploded into a study of wonders that were only speculations a few short years ago.

Einstein's relativity has transformed Astronomy into the more scientific study of Cosmology. Space-Time, The Big Bang, String Theory, and Curvature of Space are all the result of a greater understanding of the heavens.

Statistics

Statistics is the study of the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data. It deals with all aspects of this, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design of surveys and experiments.

Statistics are applied in both the physical and social sciences to determine the significance of data collected and make informed decisions based on probability of outcome.

English

Mastering of English is central to improving learning in any subject. The skills involved increase the ability of a person to communicate effectively.

The importance of mastering English can't be overstated. English is not only the native language of this country, it is the predominant language of the world. English is the language of money and commerce, and businessmen all over the world use it as their language of choice.

SAT Math

I have taught prep classes for both the SAT and the ACT. While I am a specialist in the areas of math and science, I am familiar with both test and can show my students methods that will maximize their scoring potential.

While there is no such thing as a "Magic Bullet" for taking these exams, there is help. There are some simple techniques that I will help students understand that will give them and additional edge on the SAT Math test.
