My name is Julie and I currently teach chemistry and biochemistry in the Bay Area. I enjoy helping students in general chemistry, biochemistry, AP chemistry, SAT II chemistry and any other school chemistry test preparation.
I hold a B.S. in chemistry and M.S. in biochemistry. Using molecular cloning, I have also conducted research in biochemistry and neuroscience laboratories at UC Riverside and San Diego State University. I have extensive teaching experience in college-level general chemistry, biochemistry and neuroscience from three different universities, as well as experience in tutoring individuals at both the high school and college levels. My goal is to help any student understand, summarize, and prepare for comprehensive chemistry exams in order to obtain a desired result in a relatively short amount of time.

Julie is a superb AP Chemistry tutor with uncommon teaching techniques. While simplifying complex concepts, she separates the important from mundane, and inculcates in the students a quiet sense of confidence. This confidence allows the students to do exceptionally well in the classroom that in turn feeds their confidence on the AP exam. While being gentle, she also is a tough task master. I am not sure who suggested her as a tutor but I am in their debt. All in all, an exceptional find. Thank you, Julie.
Julie has been tutoring my son for the last month or so in chemistry honors. He says she's a great teacher and explains things in a very clear, simple way. She's always on time and is very professional. She seems to truly care about my sons progress. We're very happy with her and I'm hoping my son will get a good grade in this class.
My daughter has skipped her 9th grade Bio Class and jumped into Chem class this year. At the beginning it was quite a challenge for her because her teacher is very demanding and she doesn't seem to grasp the ideas the teacher was trying to convey. Julie has spent some time with my daughter and after a month and half my daughter's confidence level has significantly improved and her understanding of Chem concepts has improved significantly. Of course, so has her performance in the class. We are really happy about the work Julie has done. Thanks Julie!!
Julie tutored my son for his honors chemistry class. During the handful of sessions he had with Julie, she was able to explain and clarify the more challenging concepts that were confusing to him. In addition, she would follow-up immediately with additional information and sample questions to build on the tutoring session.
Julie was always on time and well-prepared to begin each session. I would highly recommend her for those requiring tutoring in chemistry.
Not reliable. She came one hour late first time, and second time she did not even show up.
We were waiting for her for tutoring on Sunday, and she did not show up, even though we called her few times. She did not even answer.
Hi Viresh, thanks for your feedback. On September 7th, I was in a car accident and was recovering in the hospital for almost a week. I apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused, but it was an emergency situation.
Please let me know if we can work out an alternate tutoring plan.
She really is a chemist by training and knows her stuff! She wants every student to do very well and to get excited about the field. She is genuinely interested in the progress of student. She will assign and review extra problem sets, and even make time for extra sessions if she sees a deficiency. She is accessible by email for additional questions. Our son had a very demanding and confusing teacher, and she rose to this challenge.
Julie is very knowledgeable and patient, she has a great grasp on concepts. She is patient and works well with teenagers. I would recommend her for AP chemistry to anyone.
Julie is a very professional tutor who comes prepared and is very knowledgeable. She provides lots on on line resources and is available to students via email between lessons.
My child was interested in self-studying for the AP exam, but thought it would be helpful to get in one or two sessions for an overview.
Julie was magnificently prepared with curriculum materials, websites, and pertinent study topics. She was able to answer any question my child had.
We highly recommend her.
Congratulations on your stellar AP result! It was a joy working with the students. Thank you for a great experience.
My son is taking Chemistry Honors at an elite private high school. Julie has helped him tremendously, preparing him for tests and stepping through complex topics. Since he began working with Julie, he has increased his course grade level and understanding of chemistry. Julie is an expert in chemistry and has an ability to explain complex scientific concepts. She tracks the chemistry curriculum of local public and private area high schools and knows the key concepts students need to grasp in order to do well. She is conscientious and on time. I definitely recommend her for tutoring Honors or AP level chemistry.
Julie removed the fear of Chemistry from my daughter's mind. Julie pushed her to work hard. Initially my daughter did not like that but as she saw the test results improve, she loved it. Julie was well prepared - she came with models, supporting material, additional test problems. She was always on time, and accommodated schedule changes easily.
I highly recommend her.
My son really enjoys being tutored by Julie. She reviews the material very thoroughly and hopefully he will do well in his SAT 2 chemistry. She works with him and makes sure he understands his work. I recommend her.
Julie is a great tutor and her passion for chemistry really shows when teaching the student. She really cares about the student and their progress. It is very easy to reach her and she makes the student feel comfortable enough to email her everyday with questions. She definitely puts 100% effort in what she is doing. I would definitely recommend her to anyone.
Julie did a fantastic job tutoring our son in Chem AP. She is well prepared and explained the material clearly. Would highly recommend Julie.
Congratulations on his exciting score, a 5 on AP chemistry!
Julie is dedicated & thorough and works hard to meet goals. We are very happy with the extra attention she gave my son. Grades went up and stayed up. I highly recommend her!
Julie tutored my son in AP Chemistry. She is an expert on the subject matter.
She is methodical in her approach and adjusted her style of teaching to my son's way of learning. On her first visit, she helped my son understand the areas that were confusing to him in school. She breaks out the concepts in small parts in a way that can be easily understood.
She came once a week yet follows through on each assignment and course work during the week. She helps develop discipline and got my son used to presenting step by step calculation rather than just the final calculation. She gives a good amount of homework. She is generous with her knowledge and even provided insight on SAT.
Her first goal is to make sure the kid learns. She works hard to make sure that every penny spent is worth it.
I highly recommend her to anyone needing a tutor. She is also a very nice person. She cares and that is important!
After her tutoring, my son became confident with his knowledge that he plans to take Chemistry for his SAT subject test in addition to Math. 5 stars to Julie.
Congratulations on his exciting AP results, a 5 on AP chemistry and a 5 on AP calculus!
My son was struggling with AP Chem in the 2nd semester. Ms. Julie started tutoring my son in February. By the end of April, my son grade improved to A-. Thanks Ms. Julie for your patience and dedication.
Julie is by far one of the best tutors I have ever had. She is extremely patient and comes completely prepared with lecture material for each session. She explains all material thoroughly and is wonderful! Very happy with her.
Julie arrived on time and was very professional throughout the lesson. She knows her stuff and we are delighted to have her as an AP Chem tutor. I am confident she will make a difference.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
AP chemistry should be as high-level as a general chemistry course in college. In order to guide students, I have notes and worksheets organized by topic on my website. My AP students solve practice questions from previous exams created by CollegeBoard on each topic. AP chemistry is usually an easier course to approach due to the plethora of information available online and the types of questions on the test administered by CollegeBoard.
The SAT chemistry subject test is easier for some students because of the simple question types and shorter proctored test time. Although it often requires many months of organized preparation in order to obtain a score over 90%, I have had some very successful students achieve this in only six to ten weeks.
Students lose interest in the subject primarily because of a poor understanding of stoichiometry. Once they understand the concepts of a mole and of molarity, most of them are comfortable with solving comprehensive questions in more advanced topics. In order to help students, I teach a fairly simple approach to Lewis dot structures, and utilize model kits to simulate molecular geometry. I also introduce a shortcut to hybridization that many students find to be helpful.
