From the moment I first spoke with Tina, I knew she was the best tutor for my little brother.
My little brother struggled with reading comprehension and math and he did not have much confidence in his studies, Tina helped change all of that. Tina is one of the kindest people you'll ever meet and her kindness and genuine care in my brother's success, and I'm sure in all her other students is what makes her extra special. She is just wonderful and we all trust her very much. Tina understands that each child learns differently and she has the patience to find out what way that is, and then nurture it to help that student succeed. One of my favorite memories of her session with my brother is when Tina was trying to help my brother learn a concept in math and he was not getting it. Tina kept trying different ways and the entire time her calm demeanor never changed; and though my brother was struggling for a while to grasp the idea, when he finally did and something clicked, there was this huge sparkle in his eyes. It was like the brightest light bulb just went off and he was so proud. Tina never gave up and she kept trying different ways until one of them finally worked. My shy brother who is usually afraid to say an answer, in case it is the wrong one was not afraid to try and keep trying until finally he got it. She instilled confidence in him to TRY and not worry about falling, but to get back up and try again. She is so encouraging that it makes trying, for my brother, so much easier and he does not feel bad about not understanding.
Tina is very talented in her approach to learning because not only is she very smart herself, but she is also able to break down complicated concepts into a language that will make sense to each of her students, in my case, the language of a fifth grade boy. He has learned so much from Tina, especially little tricks and good habits that teachers do not have time to focus on in the classroom. My brother's teachers have noticed a huge difference in his schoolwork and learning skills and I attribute it all to Tina. He is so much more confident in the classroom and is able to do his homework now with very little help from me. Tina is great and I cannot say enough good things about her, our family is so lucky to have her and so is anyone else that chooses to have Tina work with their child.
Tina has helped my son improve a full grade in High School Spanish 2. Tina is patient and has helped in pronunciation, reading, and writing. My son enjoys the tutoring sessions and his Spanish has improved a lot. I highly recommend Tina as a Spanish tutor.
My son's math grade had improved one whole grade. His teacher is proud and we are proud of him. We are extremely grateful for Tina. Tina is an awesome tutor.
Tina has been very helpful. She is practically available every time I have needed her. Excellent person and tutor.
Tina is a very sweet and kind lady. Tina has been helping my son so much and I am very thankful.
I rarely write online reviews, positive or negative, but Tina deserves one. She is very conscientious. It is too early to comment on whether she has made a difference to the academic performance of my kids, but we will find out very soon. Thanks, Tina.
Tina tells my daughter how to read English patiently in her every lessons. I and my husband are appreciative for her. We look forward to meeting you in the future.
Thank you for the great lessons. I hope we will finally get the new book by next week. Sorry for the delay. Thank you and hasta luego!
My son had trouble with Spanish -II and we (parents) have no clue about this language. He used to work a lot and tried to find online help as he can from many different websites. His scores slipped in the first term. At that time, I happen to find Tina through WyzAnt and requested her help. She worked with my son to understand his requirements (or issues) and developed a good tutoring plan. She never missed a session and very accommodating for last minute changes in the schedule too. Best of all, Tina gave him the confidence needed and brought him back from the frustration mode. At the end of second term my son was able to achieve "A" grade. I sincerely believe, Tina has a lot to do with my son's success.
Tina has been working with my 7 years old son for almost a year. The tutoring sessions focused on his reading, writing and math skills. Tina is a wonderful teacher and a lovely person. She is flexible, patience, compassionate, supportive and creative.
Tina could easily identify my child strengths and knew exactly how to motivate and encourage him. My son likes her very much and he has progressed academically a great deal throughout the school year.
Tina is very easy to talk to and she takes initiative to understand the situation the student is in and accordingly adjust the coaching the get the best results.
We've had a number of tutors over the years for various subjects for our son who is entering his Junior year of High School, and Tina is by far the most reliable and effective one we've ever had. She helped him raise his grade from a C- to a B+ in Spanish II this last semester and secured him a spot in Spanish III next year, which was in question due to his previously low marks. She was reliable and consistent and never missed a session, and she was quick to respond to communications from us. Most importantly, my son said he felt very comfortable with her and said she made learning the material fun and easy, which was a big change for him considering Spanish is his least favorite subject. We're so glad we found Tina and look forward to working with her again this coming school year!
Tina has been teaching my kids for 6 months and she has helped them in developing good studying habits and was very informative in all academic areas. She has used creative strategies to engage my kids!
Tina has been working with my 8 year old twins this year, and has done an excellent job with their math, reading and writing skills. Their grades have gone up by more than a whole grade level! Tina is patient, resourceful and intelligent and has an understanding of what the kids need. She is able to engage them and keep them interested the entire hour, and, in addition to supporting their school needs, she brings with her her own understanding and insights into whatever she teaches. She is flexible and is always happy to do whatever is required at the time in order to help them with schoolwork / homework / learning for a test. My children were opposed to having a tutor at first, but with Tina they have been happy to work with her every week and have learned a lot from her. Thank you, Tina, for a fruitful and successful tutoring year!
I contracted this tutor for my 8 year old daughter for help with her Math related work. The tutor was here for 5 lessons in total, and unfortunately decided to drop my daughter as a student due to a conversation we had over the phone. During our last lessons she spend nearly half the lesson speaking to me about her progress and how she could improve, and only spent around 20 minutes with my daughter, a very unprofessional decision. Because of this encounter I decided to give her a rating of 3 stars due to her wasting valuable time with the student. This was a major concern to me because this was the first time I had rated her with 3 stars, all previous ratings had been for 4 stars. I rate the tutors based on how much effort and what the results of my daughter are and I felt that because she decided to spend less time with the student I had the right to rate her based off that. I understand that she needed to speak to me, but I was never aware that it was cutting into my daughters learning time. The following Sunday I received a very disrespectful call from this tutor, claiming that she was unsatisfied with her rating. A rating system is created so the tutor can acknowledge where their mistakes are and how to improve, not to engage in vengeful phone calls to all the clients who decide to rate them low based on their performance. A very interesting point that this tutor had to offer was regarding the apparently gargantuan commute that she had to endure, a previously discussed inconvenience which she accepted. She was constantly and aggressively claiming that she would not accept any rating lower than 5 stars, and how it was my daughter’s fault that there was no improvement. Another concern of mine is that this tutor decided to prioritize her reputation based on this rating system and dropped my daughter because of it claiming that she could easily find a replacement who would rate her better. Finally she ended the conversation by suggesting I tutor my daughter myself and not contract your services due to her learning disabilities. This was a very disrespectful and uncalled for suggestion; I felt much discriminated and would love to continue using this service if I am liberal to make my own decisions. My daughter is a very bright student and she does not deserve to be blamed for the lack of professionalism this tutor presents. I suggest that this community reevaluate the criteria each tutor must meet, and to prioritize the best interest of the child not the satisfaction of each tutor's ego.
In review of what I have read there is an incorrect presentation of facts. First of all I told Evangelina that her daughter is gifted. I actually gave her daughter extra tutoring and spent additional time with Evangelina for no charge. Her math scores went up. Then when her daughter had a difficult time paying attention to her studies with me and we weren't working well together with a test coming I suggested that she work with her mother. The reason I could no longer work with this student was because of scheduling; oftentimes, I had to wait in my car in the heat for over an hour before the lesson could begin.
I've worked with WyzAnt and value their credibility. Any child would benefit from WyzAnt tutoring no matter their gifts or capabilities.
I would strongly recommend Tina to everyone. She is a great tutor, with excellent skills and can really meet my daughter's needs with a good plans. She is really open with ideas and suggestions to plan out activities for my daughter to improve her comprehension skills and maths. She has a busy schedule but she is really good with working along with our schedule. In general, she is patient, gentle, loving, with positive attitude, and encouraging.
Tina has done a great job and is very patient! We are very appreciative of all she has done.
Our family of four boys has worked with many tutors over the past couple of years and Tina's amazing success in one short session was astounding. Our 13 year old son, 7th grade, has an aversion to anything associated with school. Tina managed to grab his attention, teach quickly and efficiently, and in return he received a record high Spanish exam score.
We hired Tina to help our daughter in Algebra and Spanish. It was quite a blessing to find someone who could help in those two subjects. She is very patient and takes the time to explain each concept. My daughter has had trouble in the past but is getting A's in these subjects so far with Tina's help. Tina is always prompt and courteous of our family and home.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In addition to substitute teaching and working for my multiple subjects teaching credential I run a small technology licensing firm. I have worked with business and marketing and ensuring that legal aspects of patenting and business organization is done carefully and well. The legal component of running a business is critical also to fulfilling government requirements for the privilege of owning an LLC and also being sure that appropriate tax laws are adhered to yearly.
There are many important issues to running a small business and a lot of administrative work that needs to be overseen. I have worked on grants and coordinated national business conferences with vendors and key consultants working closely with our marketing expert.
I am currently working to complete my Multiple Subjects Teaching credential at Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, California. Fortunately, one year of study was waived based on my PhD work and life experience. I have been a substitute teacher for Kelly Educational Staffing for four years and recently joined the Ravenswood School District. Both require passing the CBEST and CSET tests for academic skills and knowledge. I have taught throughout the San Francisco Bay Area K-12 but for the Multiple Subjects credential the emphasis is on K-6. Teaching includes lesson planning, student assessment and modifications where needed to assist struggling students.
I have also taught Digital Photography at Nueva School in Hillsborough and tutored children with learning and language disabilities K-6 through other tutoring. I love working for WyzAnt and have had tremendous results working with the K-6 age group.
As a child I grew up in a home where English was the primary language but my mother and grandmother spoke English as a second language. I'm aware of the difficulties and wonderful cultural mystery of second language learning and encourage comparative dialog to encourage confidence and build skill.
Working with English as a second language opens up an important and exciting frontier of possibilities for the learner. Improving English skills through pronunciation, writing and general communication skills is important for students in all walks of life whether for personal or professional advancement.
I am an internationally noted published speaker and writer. I have participated and moderated panels and led group discussions in many different kinds of professional and community service related environments. As a teacher I have to speak in front of a class on a daily basis and be informative, as well as, instructive about the curriculum.
Public speaking is challenging and exciting. It requires knowledge of the subject and a passion about the topic. Self confidence and the desire to communicate are critical to enjoying public speaking.
I have a professional background from The Juilliard School in New York City. I've written and collaborated on numerous songs to build peace and community to celebrate holidays like Earth Day and protecting the rights of the child for the United Nations, Unicef, Amnesty International and Bay Area Action. I'm currently working on an original screenplay with many original songs in it including by well-known artists which will be produced with professional musical direction and performance.
I come from a bi-lingual home and speak both English and Spanish. Helping students learn to speak Spanish is a wonderful experience because of the complexity and cultural richness of the language. The sounds are rhythmic and there is no learning long and short vowel sounds like the English language. The vowels always have the same sound!
Tutoring to help students with study skills is very important and rewarding. Helping young people learn how to time manage and effectively put their efforts into advancing themselves academically is critical to success in the classroom. I have worked with many students who lose focus or lack confidence at a vital moment. By helping these students put first things first and keep on top of what is being asked of them they can accelerate into a successful learning experience. Sometimes a student needs to practice details. At other times it is sustaining themselves through the difficult part of an assignment. There are many aspects to applying good study skills.
My own experience in working to complete a Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential, being awarded two masters and everything but the PhD thesis has required that I learn how to effectively complete assignments, study, and be able to write, report and test. This is a critical skillset which helps me work with students of all ages to improve their study skills.
I have written and been published professionally in the international community for IPRA, the International Peace Research Association, the Global Computer Congress as part of the United Nations through Unesco, and Eurologo. The themes of my papers include learning, and learning environments, and art and peace. I'm a published poet and am currently preparing for film preproduction on the rewrite of an original screenplay. I write in many different forms and enjoy in particular short essays, correspondence and reports. Helping students learn to write and find a personal voice is critical to cultivating imagination through the power of the pen.
