I am a California state certified teacher in English, though I am currently a teacher education professor. I have taught all grade levels through after school programs, as an educational consultant or as as a full time teacher. My expertise is in the use of culturally responsive and relevant teaching strategies to engage young people in learning. I work with youth and adults to identify the most effective ways of learning for them and remove the blocks in achieving success. In addition to my subject matter expertise, particularly in English, I have teaching experience in Spanish, Algebra, general computer skills, study skills, life skills. As an author with publications in over 50 journals, a two published books, I am also adept at the teaching of creative writing, including essay writing. I have actually won essay competitions, which can only help guide those students who are themselves looking to perfect college essays or determine how to reach success on standardized tests like the ACT or SAT. Finally, I am a techie, meaning that I love technology, particularly educational technology. You need to learn how to create that booklet or ebook or what apps are best to teach certain concepts? I'm definitely the person to help or the knight to call, if you will.
As for my educational background, I have a BA in Journalism from Penn State University - University Park with minors in Spanish, English, African American Studies and International Studies. I graduated with honors in English, magna cum laude. I have a MA in the Teaching of English from Teachers College Columbia University. I also have a PhD in Education from University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill with emphases in literacy, English education, multicultural education, and critical pedagogy. I am currently working on my second masters in educational leadership, which I will complete by Fall 2014. I am an active writer, teacher, and researcher. I have received writing fellowships across the country and abroad.
