I have been tutoring since I was in high school. My students have ranged from kindergartners to college students, and most of them still keep in touch. I love that one moment of clarity they experience when I've finally found the way to explain the material that makes sense to them, and it's why I never get tired of the job.

I like to pinpoint my student's strengths and weaknesses in the first session so that I can focus on their learning style. I make sure I'm familiar and confident enough with the material I'm teaching so that I can manipulate the ways I explain it. I have enough experience to be familiar with enough examples to accompany a theoretical explanation. I've cut pieces of paper to teach geometry, lined up erasers for an algebra lesson, and sketched an entire classroom to demonstrate probability. Learning is an interactive process and a sense of humor never fails.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I just finished a master's degree with honors in religious studies at the University of Kansas. I took many courses in anthropology and presented my research at conferences. I will be starting a PhD program at Duke in the fall, with an external minor in anthropology.

CBEST

I took the CBEST in 2009. I passed, but the score report did not include a percentage. The test was very easy for me and I feel confident enough to help others with it.

College Counseling

I just went through an application process myself, securing admission to Harvard, Duke, and UC San Diego for the PhD. I've also been advising many of my students for college admissions, especially working on the statements of purpose with them. Most recently, I had 3 students, my brother, and 2 cousins admitted. Having been through the application process 3 times myself and also serving as graduate student representative on the admissions committee gives me a rare insight into the process.

Farsi

I was born in Iran. I moved to the US at the age of 16, having finished 10 years of schooling in Iran. I also taught Farsi at the Iranian School of San Diego.

Public Speaking

I won a silver medal in speech at the regional Academic Decathelon in high school. I have since worked on my skills and boast 15 professional conference presentations on my CV. I've also been trained for public speaking in my master's program.

Religion

I just finished a master's degree with honors in religious studies at the University of Kansas. I finished my degree with a thesis. I will be starting a PhD program at Duke in the fall.

Sociology

I just finished a master's degree with honors in religious studies at the University of Kansas. In addition to religion, I took many courses in sociology. I have also organized a panel for the Sociology of Religion conference this summer.
