Thank you for looking at my profile. I have had a number of years of experience teaching and tutoring. Aside from private tutoring, I have been a tutor for elementary and middle school children in an after school program which was funded by the No Child Left Behind Act. I taught both Language Arts and Math skills. My private tutoring classes have included elementary subjects, pre-algebra, algebra 1, reading comprehension, essay writing, English grammar, conversational English and Spanish grammar and conversation.
I spent a year in Spain where I was teaching English and perfecting my Spanish. I have an internationally recognized English teaching certificate from TEFL/TESOL International. I have taught one-on-one classes for both children and adults and small group classes. These classes have focused on grammar as well as conversational lessons. I also taught for two years in a private language school for adults in Berkeley, CA. I worked with students from all over the world and of all ages (over 16). I learned a great deal about teaching methods and ways to communicate clearly, regardless of the background of the student. While I really enjoyed my grammar and conversational classes my favorite was the academic writing class. In this class I assisted students in writing papers, letters of intention, cover letters for job applications, vocabulary acquisition, and test preparation for competency tests such as TOEFL and IELTS.

I am also a graduate of San Francisco State University. My studies included Anthropology and Spanish and I was placed on the Dean's List for four consecutive semesters. Please contact me with any questions or interests. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored students both privately and one-on-one in Language Arts and Math. One-on-one tutoring mostly included school work help. I also worked in the Oakland Unified School District with J-Vision, Inc. under the No Child Left Behind Act teaching Language Arts and Math skills to elementary and middle school students. With this company we pre-tested and post-tested students to monitor their improvements. We utilized workbooks, real life situations, computer programs, and school work to practice Language Arts and Math.

ESL/ESOL

I am an ESL/ESOL teacher. I have taught in Spain and the U.S. My classes have included one-on-one private lessons, group classes (15-20 students) and small group classes. I have taught in small language schools as well as at the students' home. Students have ranged from young teenagers to retired professionals from many different countries. Also, I have led many tourist and cultural activities for students visiting the Bay Area.

Study Skills

I have taught students one-on-one and in groups from the U.S. and numerous other countries as well as to adults and all age groups of children. In all situations there are underlying themes that are important and vital to being a successful student. Reading instructions carefully, taking time when answering questions, always editing work once completed and being organized are crucial if the student wants to master the subject. Other important traits are asking questions, understanding resource material and where to find examples or definitions of concepts and thinking critically.

Very resourceful — My child has a learning disability and Samantha has worked well with my child in keeping her focused and on track. It is a different form of tutoring that cannot be accomplished by many. My daughter uses a private home school learning module with quite the academic challenge. The program is UC accredited. Thank you Samantha. ...
