Patient and experienced tutor for math, English, and SAT prep

Hi! I am a patient and dedicated tutor with over 7 years of experience. I have a lot of energy with my students, and my age allows me to relate to them better. I'm bilingual in Mandarin, which is my native language, but I majored in English at UCLA, one of the best universities in the nation. As an English major, my classes emphasized critical reading and analysis skills in literature, as well as eloquent writing skills. I also have plenty of experience with math as well, having taken advanced calculus classes in school and teaching math to many students each year. As a student, I was a National Merit Semifinalist based on my score on the PSAT exam. I went on to score in the 99.7th percentile of the new SAT exam, with perfect scores of 800 on both the math and verbal sections. Every year, I prepare many high school students for both PSAT and SAT exams.

I really enjoy teaching and love tutoring students of all ages, from children as young as 5 to adult professionals. In fact, I've often had long term tutoring jobs with families, some lasting as long as 4 years. I love helping my students achieve their academic goals and feel more confident in their skills. I feel that patience, encouragement, and perseverance in teaching are the pathways to success!

Algebra 1

Along with geometry, algebra is one of the subjects I help students with the most. I took all advanced and honors math classes, up to AP Calculus, and also received an A in Finite Mathematics when I took college-level linear algebra. I am very knowledgeable about the subject and have a lot of patience with my students. I enjoy going over different methods of approaching a problem to help them find the best way to solve a problem as well as understand the concept.

Geometry

Geometry is one of the subjects I tutor the most. Geometry proofs, theorems, and postulates can be very difficult for many students because the concepts are so different from anything they've previously encountered in Algebra. However, I find that explaining the concepts in detail and showing exactly how to prove a theorem can help students gain a better understanding of the fundamental concepts. Also, visualizing and working on every problem together step by step produces great results!

Writing

I received the highest possible score of 5 on the AP English Language and Composition. Also, I have an extensive vocabulary and plenty of experience with essay writing, due to my English major at UCLA. Although writing can be difficult to teach, I find that creating my own lesson plans to encourage students to "show, not tell" is very effective! We also focus on the 6 main traits of writing: ideas, diction (word choice), sentence fluency, conventions (grammar), voice, and organization.

English

As a student, I received the highest possible score of 5 on the AP English Language and Composition exam. Then, as an English major at UCLA, I had an intensive curriculum of English writing and literature classes, which focused on critical reading, analysis, and essay writing skills. I have an extensive vocabulary, which is a critical component in English classes.

SAT Math

Although the SAT is considered an "aptitude" exam, it has many questions that students would normally never see in math classes. After extensive preparation, I scored a perfect 800 on the SAT I Math, and an 800 on the SAT Math 2C exam as well. Literature

SAT Reading

The SAT Critical Reading section is often the most difficult section for students. I received perfect scores of 800 on the reading section both times that I took the SAT, but only after I taught myself some crucial critical reading strategies. Chinese

I was born in China and lived there until I was 8. As a native Mandarin speaker, I can easily tell the differences in pronunciation of difficult sounds that exist in Chinese, but do not exist in the English language.
