Hi there! My name is Sheila and I'm an experienced science educator, having taught at the middle school, high school, community college, and university levels. I won the UCSB Science Education Outreach Award and the ScienceLine Award for Outstanding Contributions to K-12 Science Education, and was nominated for an Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. I was also a National Science Foundation Graduate Teaching Fellow. Through my work as an educator, I have been trained in Research for Better Teaching, and Teaching and Learning with Digital Media.

I tutor with patience and enthusiasm, with a focus on the enduring understanding of concepts, incorporating prior knowledge, realizing the relevance of new topics, and overall success in your course. Although I am a scientist, I also have experience helping students in math, reading, and study skills.

As a graduate student, I was very involved in improving science education in my community. Study Skills

As a middle school teacher, it was my duty to teach students how to study for enduring understanding and to prepare for exams. In one-on-one tutoring, I have an opportunity to help a student decide what methods work best for them, be it flash cards or online quiz games or video-recording themselves completing equations. Special Needs

As a middle school teacher, I had students with special needs in my classroom. I worked directly with the students, their parents, and an educational specialist to best meet the students' needs and follow their IEP. As a tutor, I will work with the students' established needs and requirements and help work on study and classroom coping skills in addition to the subject matter, as needed and requested.

ISEE

I worked previously in an elite private school and am familiar with the ISEE test required for admissions. I am quite familiar and skilled in multiple choice testing and the comprehension, math, and writing skills needed for success on the test. I have also twice proctored the ISEE.
