I am interested in tutoring select students with a sincere desire to improve their English language skills.

I am a graduate of the University of California Berkeley; I hold a lifetime teaching credential from Los Angeles Community Colleges Overseas in adult education, and have taught ESL for the US Army's Basic Skills Education Program and the Job Corps, as well as to independent students and small classes. My students have had wide a range of English language skills, from very basic to advanced. I am empathetic with the extraordinary challenges of language learning as a former student of German and several other Slavic/Eastern European languages.

I will tailor your language training to suit your needs and abilities, and promise that we will have a good time in the process.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

While my degree is in German language, I have strong English language skills and a passion for language in general. I grew up the daughter of an English teacher and poet, and so the use of correct grammar and vocabulary were emphasized by her throughout my school years. The last thirty years of my career focused on reading, analysis, and writing papers that strongly and explicitly conveyed the points I was making. I also supervised a small group of analysts and was responsible for ensuring that their papers were concise and well written.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL to students with a range of English language skills. These ranged from the most rudimentary to those students who simply wanted to hone a particular skill. My own foreign language study has made me empathetic to the challenges of language learning. Seeing my students make small or large strides in gaining language proficiency is a success for both of us as a team.

Reading

Reading is one of my greatest pleasures. It is at the core of almost everything we do. To help you improve your reading skills, I start by understanding both your current capabilities and your interests and then try to find reading materials that match your skills and interests. You'll make better and faster progress if you are interested in what you are reading. I want to see my students learn to love reading as much as I do.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary - that's just words, right? Well, not quite. It's your ability to understand the meanings and how to use those words - effectively. My methodology for teaching (and learning) vocabulary is to look up words, understand their meaning, and then use, use, use those words until they become part of your vocabulary. I like to use a lot of word games and challenges to lock that vocabulary into your memory. It should not be a chore - it should be fun to find just the right word to describe what you want to say.
