I hold BAs in History (European) and Language Studies from UC Santa Cruz. I also hold a single subject (grades 7-12) teaching credential in Spanish Language and am additionally certified as bilingual.
History: In addition to European history, I am also knowledgeable about American history and world history, and somewhat about Asian and Latin American history. My focus is mostly modern (post-Renaissance) and thematically broad (i.e. diplomatic, intellectual, economic, military etc).
Language Studies/Languages: I am fully fluent in English and Spanish; my approach is mostly linguistic in nature, but I am willing and able to adjust and tailor to the individual needs of each person, i.e. functional abilities (day to day phrases) or culturally inclined. I can help with reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I can also help with writing skills, i.e. helping to research, draft, outline essays and other written work (such as resumes) as well as edit/proofread them. I also have knowledge of other languages (2 years of Russian through the intermediate level; 1 semester of Arabic; some self-teaching of German, Croatian, Latin) and can cross reference these languages on a limited level.
Testing: I have familiarity with SAT and CBEST and some knowledge of the ACT. I am familiar with basic testing preparation and practices.
Overall methodology: I tailor all tutoring to the specific needs of the individual. I do this to offer flexibility and make tutoring of optimal value to each student. The first session is geared toward establishing goals, boundaries, methods of measuring progress. I am rigorous and demanding, but overall am effective in helping those I tutor. My tutoring experience is mostly with high school students and older.
