Hello, I am Terry, and if you are looking for the most effective, patient tutor you can find, you have come to the right place.

Each student, regardless of their academic level, has a chance to achieve an even higher level - and soon. No child can be left behind - the time to get them help is now! I have tutored in both 1:1 and small group situations for the 13 years since I graduated from Cal State Northridge and have spent much of that time in substitute teaching as well, both in day-to-day and long-term assignments. I specialize in working with elementary-aged children as that is where my credential is. Let's get to 'em early and get them on the path to learning! Call me, I am flexible with scheduling and willing to get to work with your child right away!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

My multiple subject credential in elementary education indicates the vast experience I have in working with Children of grades K-6. I am proficient in all subjects at these grade levels and am ready to work with your children to help them achieve their highest academic goals!

Elementary Math

My math specialty is in grades 1-5. I excel in getting children to understand the basics of math. I am big on teaching kids their times tables. Algebra and other higher level math courses are important, but it all stops if students don't know their basic elementary math skills!

Phonics

I have a multiple subjects credential, which indicates my experience with elementary school students, much of which has been in Grades K-3. This has given me much experience in the teaching of phonics and phonemes, which are the individual sounds within words. The understanding of phonics give students the basic principles and tools which help them to develop into successful readers.

Reading

Math is important to say the least, but being a good reader is even more critical. Learn to read, and a whole new world opens up! It doesn't really matter the content, kids don't need to be reading Shakespeare (although that is okay!), they just need to read... something! Get them a subscription to a magazine of something interests them, and they will read it from cover to cover! Presto, you now have a fully engaged reader!

Special Needs

I have experience in both Special day class, mild to moderate, and in RSP resource classes at the elementary level. I have spent several weeks at a time in both RSP and resource classes at the elementary level and have also sat in on IEP meetings and have helped to craft custom IEP's. I have also been trained at Cal State Northridge in Special education classes. There are some children who just need that little extra help and push to get them through, and I am here to help provide that.

Writing

Writing is often an overlooked skill, especially in this day and age of computers and instant messaging. However, we must not overlook writing, as these skills often speak of not only the type of person we are, but how we are thought of by others. Grammar, spelling, and vocabulary are all critical, but writing skills are where these tools are all put together and find a home!

When many people hear the words "special needs," it tends to conjure up many negative thoughts. Thoughts of kids running around the room acting crazy. Fighting with other kids. Driving teachers crazy. All kinds of bad things. Yet, many of these people have never been anywhere near an RSP (resource) or Special Day class. Things can be a bit tough in these classes, but they are really... read more

Ahhh...writing, the lost art. It seems in this day and age of instant messaging, texting, email, and social media, true, professional writing is a lost art. You know how it goes, you're is now ur (and some people really believe this!), "there" is spelled the same no matter how it is used, and on and on. I am truly amazed when I see someone expressing their opinion on something, and... read more

Math-the ugly word! I raises the worst fears among many of us. It really does not have to be that way, however. Although I am far from being even semi good at Algebra or other higher math, I have the basics down just fine. It is really too bad how many people don't. Even adults I have met in college in some cases don't know their times tables. To me that is a bit sad. Somehow they missed out... read more
