My name is Sajan S. and I am currently a 3rd year undergraduate student at UCLA. My passion for teaching students stems from my experience tutoring students while I was in high school. I held after school tutoring classes for AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Chemistry, and AP Biology. I originally tutored solely for community service hours, however, I quickly learned that tutoring was my passion. I enjoy seeing students conquer difficult topics because I feel successful when they feel successful. Many times I have seen students give up on their grade in a class because their teacher is not using a style of teaching suitable to them. I customize my teaching style to the needs of the student so that he or she can learn in the fastest and most efficient manner. I believe my strengths as a tutor are my patience, my professionalism, and my friendly personality, which make the students feel comfortable around me.
My approach to teaching is a technique that involves a three step process. I first understand the student's weakness so that I do not waste time strengthening skills that a student already has mastered. Next, I demonstrate how to do certain problems or teach concepts that I believe the student needs to work on. Finally, I present multiple problems relevant to the area of weakness to guarantee that the student has mastered the concept. I have seen many students' grades jump 2-3 grade levels from my technique, and a few students I have assisted in earning A grades from failing grades.
My experience tutoring has strengthened in college as I continue to teach other students difficult subjects such as biochemistry, organic chemistry, and the life sciences. The University has also given me the opportunity to teach a class on Preventive Medicine to undergraduate students. This opportunity is a very coveted position, which involved an application process, an interview, and hours upon hours of preparation.
My life goal is to become a physician. I plan on using my experience as a tutor in the future to educate patients on their health and treatments in an effective way.
I took the biochemistry course at UCLA and earned an A. I helped my friends study for the exams and they also improved their grades from their midterms to their final. I taught my friends the concepts by using visuals because I believe this is the most efficient technique.
Summer 2013 I wrote the MCAT and scored in the 99th%. During my studying, I developed the perfect strategy to tackle each type of question. I have a personalized, rigorous approach for teaching other students the skills I have obtained so that they too can earn the score they desire. Along with MCAT study strategies, I will talk to the student about planning for medical school- this includes fulfilling prerequisites, finding research, working in the hospital, shadowing, and all the other fun stuff!
