Hello, I have been working with students privately and through the public schools since 1999. I have very high scores for reading comprehension. When asked to take tests for my teaching credential, I found this to be true. I can teach practical and easy ways to get the most out of your reading, help learn vocabulary, help with spelling, and all the different essays a student might be required to write in school or work.
I am a published author, and I do occasionally get invited to universities to speak on writing, and to read my own. My love of reading and writing started early, but I have kept up with my own practice and can share all my tips with any of my students. I work on brain storming, using visual diagrams, work on close reading and what is known as distant reading. Whatever technique works best, or feels best for the student is how we begin. Learning should be fun, if not a bit challenging, and I like to keep both feelings going for optimal results. We can work on Grammar too, but what I like to do is first get the idea of where the student's level of work is now. After we ave decided exactly which troubles the student has, we begin from that point. I have 2 degrees in English, so I am well equipped to teach any level, from elementary to college.
Most importantly, I want my students to reach the point where there is no more struggling or anxiety over reading and writing. When we reach that point,then the best work can be accomplished. I will teach all the different kinds and styles of essay writing, I will give tips on how to get the most out of reading, and then the student can begin practicing these styles until they are mastered. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have studied Art history as a personal interest since childhood. My grandparents were collectors of Art, and had an extensive library in which to teach me all the different schools of art from ancient to current styles. I also took a course in school, but the actual art that I saw growing up around me, and in museums around the world, had a great effect on my education and knowledge.
I have been working with children with ASD since 1999. I work privately and at schools to help these children, especially the ones who have self injurious behavior. I can create what is called extinction. I also help kids with Autism understand and comprehend texts needed for school.

I have been speaking to students at Universities for several years on the subjects of Writing and Literature. I also was a fierce debater in High School. I also have done 1000s of small reading events throughout the Bay area for over 20 years.
Working as a special day class teacher allows me to understand how to use all the equipment that many of these children need for their health. I also know how to deal with cortical blindness, severe Autism, Down syndrome, fragile x syndrome, and many different cognitive and physical impairments. I know how to use a stander, side layer, g tubes and toileting. I know how to habit train for toileting to allow the student more freedom in the day if possible. I can feed children who need assistance, and understand how to use special chairs to help students be in the best position for learning. I am also quite familiar with the computerized devices that allow children who cannot speak on their own to be able to use the computer to write how they feel, or to write essays poems, and stories. I know how to make the entire day worthwhile without having it be a day of just feeding and toileting. I have no trouble escorting children in wheelchairs on public transport. I open the world up for these students.
I have been writing for a very long time now. I have published a book of poems, and have been anthologized as well. I speak at colleges on the topic of writing, and writing about direct experience to create narratives, and poems. Students say they like my sense of humor, and that I have great speaking skills.
My book, Really Boomba, was published by WePress, and I had my last poem published by Fade Poetry Journal out of Nottingham UK.
I am fully dedicated to my craft, and can pass on all my tricks and tips to any student of any age.
