I am currently a freelance graphic artist, specializing in technical illustration, print design and layout, as well as brochure and book design.
My education is in fine arts (I hold bachelor's and master's degree) as well as cartography and geography. I am an experienced photographer with work in print and exhibitions. I travel extensively and as a Peace Corps volunteer I taught introductory computer classes in Belize. I have established and headed graphics departments in several firms, and have hired, trained, and supervised graphics staff. Part of this work has included installation of computers and software, and the upkeep of small computer networks.
I specialize in tutoring in the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, Bridge/Camera RAW and InDesign), with particular emphasis on Illustrator. I am also available for tutoring on the use of Macintosh computers.
My teaching approach is to first understand and determine the student’s needs, so I can tailor my instruction to what is important to the student. I introduce concepts methodically and clearly to build to a place where the student is comfortable. Once the basics are in place, I work with the student to introduce additional elements. My emphasis is always to make sure that the student has a clear understanding of the concepts and possibilities of the particular application he is trying to master. I build from this understanding, introducing additional concepts as needed. I prefer clarity and understanding, rather than jargon, to achieve a degree of facility before proceeding to more complex concepts or programs.
I enjoy working and teaching in one-on-one situations, but also can teach in small classroom settings. I work in the student’s home/office, or when practical, other locations such as a library. I try to be flexible with scheduling and while I have a 24-hour cancellation policy, I am open to re-scheduling classes when ever possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
