About Maryam

Dear Student,

A caring instructor is one that remembers his/her experiences and makes sure to use them to transform their students' life. I came from an overall D and discouragement, to straight As and strong confidence thanks to one hell of a professor who understood me, was tough enough, and gave me the right tools. I now am in graduate school and would never have dreamed of reaching that level before.
I have integrated these strategies in my teaching pedagogy, and I can help you succeed if you want it too.
I know what it takes and I am extremely patient.

No wrong questions and no wrong answers with me, this is not class, and I don't want you to be shy.
We get our A game on, we get comfortable and we deal with your academic needs.
I teach from K to college & adults, I have taught from the US to Europe and the Caribbean, and so I have a culture friendly teaching style; I work in teams [parent/student/teacher (if needed)] because 'it takes a village', and it is more successful.
We use what you know, what you like, your strengths and weaknesses to learn the subject, and we don't just do paper/pencil, we use technology as well as old school strategies.

I can tutor K-12 science, math, English, Spanish , French to name a few.
I can tutor College students in English, French, Psychology to name a few.
I can also prep for GRE, TOEFL, and some subject in SAT, ACT.
I have experience guiding adults in continuing education as well.

I am flexible with time and meeting location. Ideally 5h before we meet would be great to cancel, but I understand things happen and will do my best to meet you at a convenient time.

If you are not satisfied with my tutoring, no hard feelings we'll part ways on a positive note.

Contact me, and let's see how I can help you succeed.

I look forward to working with you!

Your Dedicated Tutor.
Maryam

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Taking the ACT English exam requires to be confident, time-organized, and drilled. I can do just that as your tutor. We have to cover areas I am comfortable with being required to write publishable level papers as a doctoral student:

1/ Usage/Mechanics: punctuation, grammar and usage, sentence, structure
2/ Rhetorical Skills: strategy, organization, style

Having a masters in social sciences and being currently completing a doctorate pushes me to be extremely comfortable with writing, and reading English in complex research journals and through my presentations and teaching.

ACT Reading

Taking the ACT Reading exam requires to be confident with yourself and with reading, time-organized, knowing tricks, and be drilled. I can do just that as your tutor.
We have to cover areas I am comfortable with being required to write publishable level papers as a doctoral student:

Being comfortable with ACT reading will take to understand the major idea and context, but also pick out important details about people, events, places, objects. It takes to know how to compare these cues, being able to generalize to other aspects of life, and understand some things about the author.

As we study together, I will help you go over texts, practice the skills I mentioned, and help you get over exam anxiety.

Anatomy

I took quite a bit of Biological courses in undergraduate (General Biology for example). In graduate school I focused on Cellular molecular Biology + labs, neuroanatomy + labs. I have a fair understanding of nervous, endocrine, respiratory, digestive, and circulatory systems. I can help students understand, draw, and memorize using fun methods I have learned such as mnemonic tricks and others. Bio is fun, its just a question of making it contagious to the student.

Bible Studies

I am a child of a Preacher, and I have been raised in a Christian family all my life. This means that I have gone through Bible teaching at home, at church, and through pathfinders.

I am familiar with the Bible and surrounding literature. I have gotten a masters and am completing a K-12 teaching credential from a Christian university. I currently am a counselor for Pathfinders in my town and take care this year of preparing them for a national Bible Bowl. I also have been a children teacher in my church for many years, including bible study and programs.

Biology

I took quite a bit of Biological courses in undergraduate (General Biology for example). In graduate school I focused on Cellular molecular Biology + labs, neuroanatomy + labs. I have a fair understanding of nervous, neural, endocrine, respiratory, digestive, and circulatory systems.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have done the entire coursework and practicum for a K-12 teaching credential, I am finishing up the last in class practicum of 18 weeks.

I have taught kindergartners in class, and took care of K instruction for a group of ELL children in my town. I tutored children from K-12 for many years and am familiar with the curriculum.

English

I was born in France and lived and studied there until I passed my Bachelors degree. Then I came to the US to do my masters and doctorate. I am fluent in English and very comfortable teaching French/English. I taught and tutored for a university in both languages. I also do translation French/English -- English/French for my husband who is a public speaker.

Having been in school in both countries allow me to go back and forth between both languages comfortably, as much orally as in writing. I have a masters and am currently completing a doctorate in the United States which pushes me to be extremely comfortable with writing, and reading English in complex research journals and through my presentations and teaching.

French

I was born in France and lived and studied there until I passed my Bachelors degree. Then I came to the US to do my masters and doctorate. I am fluent in English and very comfortable teaching French/English. I also do translation for my husband who is a public speaker.

Having been in school in both countries allow me to go back and forth between both languages comfortably as much orally as in writing. I have a BS in literature and Art, which included being proficient in matters of Grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, writing and so forth in French.

GRE

I passed the GRE twice for graduate school. Needless to say that I have been there and know now how to pass that test. I am a dynamic tutor who likes to use her concrete experience to help you avoid the pitfalls.

Taking the GRE requires to review basic Math, and English.
I know how to drill you, I know where to find the practice tests, the mnemonic strategies, and the tricks to succeed.
I have also quite a bit of experience helping students lower their test anxiety and time themselves for any sort of exams.

Being of European descent, I have an extra edge on the verbal reasoning exercises because I can teach you how to recognize word roots and origins to quickly get around tricky questions.

We will also talk and debate about many other cultural and society subjects that would allow you to expand your understanding of the texts to comprehend in the exam analytical part.

Practice is key, and if we work together ahead in time, you will succeed just like I did.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I use power point day in day out for my conferences, classes I teach, classes I attend (I take notes on people's power points) presentations. I embed videos (A feature that surprisingly many people do not know how to do and always have to go out to go online), I know how to make animations, add objects, pictures, music, effects. I have created plays out of slides, and movies (I know how to make transitions from the power point to PDF, iMovie and other software). I know how to set up different forms of printing formats for your presentations to be handed out etc.
If you'd like it I can also help with Prezi which is another dynamic form of slides.

Microsoft Word

I use Word everyday as I work on my degree and am constantly writing articles. Doing so implies that I need to go fast and thus have to understand features that can allow me to get the job done in an efficient way.

I am very comfortable with technology.

Phonics

Phonics is developing phonemic awareness of students in order to help them read and write fluently.
I have taken an entire program for the teaching credential K-12 in California. I learned how to break down phonics and create activities around that to help students learn. I taught regular and ELL students which required using additional methods to help them understand how English works.
It was a fun experience. Breaking down words require to have imagination to make it fun for the students, especially those with special needs. I like to involve the whole body which creates an additional sensory//kinesthetic dimension to learning, even with older kids. I just like to find what students like and I use to help them learn their words (associations, analogies, mnemonics etc.)

Proofreading

Proofreading is part of my daily activities, as I constantly write for research purposes and for class assignments and presentations. I also proofread my husband's work; he is a writer, a public speaker, and a professor.

I am thus used to looking for details that can make a paper fail or succeed and getting the right attention from audiences and reviewers. I can definitely teach strategies to students to be good proofreaders and analysts of their own work.

Psychology

I have a masters in counseling. I am currently in a doctoral degree in Developmental Psychology, where I am also required to teach undergraduates. This allows me to stay close to the knowledge acquired in undergraduate school. Psychology is my area of expertise.

Religion

I am a Christian, I teach Bible classes to adults and youth clubs. I do bible competition preps also with them. I create plays around bible themes. I have been raised in a Christian family I have a fair knowledge base of the book.

SAT Reading

I taught and tutored students from all socioeconomic backgrounds from K to adult education. Highschool is a tough period, but rich in learning experience. I have tutored a student who is now at UCLA and who succeeded very well on her tests.

Taking the SAT Reading requires to be confident with yourself and with reading, time-organized, knowing tricks, and be drilled. I can do just that as your tutor. We have to cover areas I am comfortable with being required to read and write publishable level papers as a doctoral student:

Being comfortable with SAT Reading will take to understand cues in sentences to complete them, and to be able to pin point important information about the texts to be read.

As we study together, I will help you go over texts, practice multiple questions, and the skills I mentioned above to help you succeed and get over exam anxiety if you need my support in that area as well.

Spanish

In France we were required to learn two foreign languages on top of our native language. I chose English and Spanish.

This implies that I have had many years of Spanish grammar, vocabulary and comprehension under my belt. I have tutored in Spanish, and am surrounded by Hispanic and Latino friends here in California. I can entertain a conversation, and can help a student through their homework with the material and their assignments.

I can read and comprehend the language fairly easily.

TOEFL

I am perfectly fluent in English and French, to get there 6 years ago, I had to take the TOEFL, I understand what it takes. I am a graduate student, I understand how to teach and more so, because I am of international origin, I know how to teach to people from other cultures. I regularly prep student for such exams, and I have a fairly solid base in grammar, vocabulary and comprehension. Enough to know how to prep a student for the TOEFL.

Vocabulary

I was born in France and lived and studied there until I passed my Bachelors degree. Then I came to the US to do my masters and doctorate. I am fluent in English and very comfortable teaching English. I also do translation for my husband, who is a public speaker, and help him with editing his books.
Having been in school in both countries allows me to go back and forth between both languages comfortably, as much orally as in writing. My current doctoral program requires the highest skills in grammar and vocabulary in order to present my research and publish in scholarly journals. This implies a deep understanding of the language. I thus believe to be qualified enough to operate efficiently in tutoring vocabulary to any student. I actually believe that my international background allows me to be more sensitive to a broader group of students while working with them on walking the path where I have been before them.

Writing

I was born in France and lived and studied there until I passed my Bachelors degree. Then I came to the US to do my masters and doctorate. I am fluent in English and very comfortable teaching English. I taught and tutored for a university in both languages. I also do translation French/English -- English/French for my husband who is a public speaker. I also edit, and write with him in his books.

Having been in school in both countries allows me to go back and forth between both languages comfortably, as much orally as in writing. I have a masters and am currently completing a doctorate in the United States, which pushes me to be extremely comfortable with writing and reading English in complex research journals and through my presentations and teaching.
