I am currently a college freshman at the University of California in Merced. Following my interests in medicine and physiology, I declared myself a biological sciences major with an emphasis in human biology. I've always had a knack for the math and sciences, and more recently I've developed a much stronger grasp of English (in both reading and writing). I am currently enrolled in 5 courses, totaling 18.0 semester units (the maximum number of units available to first term freshman). These courses include MATH 11 (Calculus I), MATH 15 (Statistical Data Analysis), CHEM 02 (General Chemistry I), WRI 10 (College Writing & Composition), and ARTS 2A (Beginner's Vocal Instruction). My present coursework is a relatively good representation of the subjects that I excel most in; strongly emphasizing the math and sciences (3 courses), and with lesser but equally substantial representation in English Language and the Musical Arts. The coursework that I completed in high school, is also indicative of my scholastic ability. This includes a 2130 on my general SAT test (with 700+ in all three categories: Reading, Writing, and Math), a 5 on my Calculus AB AP test, a 5 on my Biology AP test, a 4 on my Chemistry AP test, and 700+ for my SAT subjects tests in both Chemistry and Math II. Other non-academic activities that I participate in and have developed a relatively strong understanding of through practice and passionate self-investment include sports/fitness (participating on 3 varsity high school teams: Lacrosse, Water Polo, and Swimming; but over the past couple years I've been developing a strong understanding of the sport of weightlifting and bodybuilding), aquatics (in my hometown I worked a year for a private swim club coaching kids during the summer, and 2 years working for the city of Davis as a lifeguard and then a Water Safety Instructor), and music (I played piano for more than 7 years and guitar 2 years).
Though I lack any formal training in instruction or tutoring (other than membership for 3 years in the Math and Science Tutors club at my high school), I believe I have a strong enough background in math, sciences, and language arts, as well as experience with working in swim coaching/instruction, that I believe I have can excel very well as a tutor for a myriad of subjects. Because I have had such a vast array of personal experience with pre-college academics, I have an exceptional understanding of the processes and expectations of K-12 academics. When it comes to tutoring individual students, my plan is to develop an action plan with each student that best their academic needs and their personal preferences as far as learning. Because every student is different, I find it is most successful when a tutor doesn't set a rigid lesson plan and instead works with the student to encourage and develop understanding of otherwise misunderstood subjects. I will take advantage of any resources I can get my hands on to make sure that the students learn as efficiently and successfully as possible. The students come first; their success is my number one priority.
