I am a graduate of the University of Miami, Florida, achieving a B.S. and a M.S. degree, majoring in math. I teach all levels of math from third grade math to AP Calculus, including Statistics and SAT preparation. I have been tutoring math to students of all ages one-one-one since the early 1990s.

My strength in teaching math is my ability to make abstract math understandable to students. After working with me, regular students of all ages or those who have different learning modalities will all find math easy. Confidence is an attitude that makes a world of difference in learning. I will change my students' attitude toward math positively and provide them with math skills, so thorough that they will feel confident in doing math independently and successfully. I guarantee that I can raise their math grades at school within a short period into tutoring.

I am enthusiastic, patient, and perseverance. I am compassionate about math teaching and I have a great rapport with my students. I live in Martinez. I will tutor students on weekdays or weekends, during after school hours through evenings by appointment.

I look forward to working with you!

Core concepts in Alg 1 are solving linear equations & inequalities, simplifying exponents, performing basic operations involving polynomials, rational expressions, radicals, writing equations of lines, solving systems of linear equations in two variables, solving radical equations, and solving word problems.

Algebra I is one of the most important math classes in high school because it is the foundation for higher math. Practice makes perfect. Being a math tutor for more than 20 years, I am committed to taking the important responsibility of providing my students with extra practice, guidance, and personal encouragement. I also nurture my students' self-confidence. With support, my students will be kept interested in learning Algebra I concepts and excel in this class.

Beyond a thorough review on basic Algebra I concepts at the beginning of the an Alg II textbook, core Algebra II curriculum includes basic operations with Matrices: ±, scalar products, products, & inverses; graphing families of functions; polynomials: synthetic division for polynomials; rational roots for polynomials in second degree and higher; the binomials Theorem; system of 2 by 2 or 3 by 3 linear equations via matrix; basic operations with complex numbers; composite & inverse functions; exponential and log functions; conics; sequences & series; periodic functions and trigonometry.

This is a long list of math skills, where many skills are seen for the first time by the students; however, practice makes perfect. Being a math tutor for more than 20 years, I am committed in taking the important responsibility of providing my students with extra practice, guidance, and personal encouragement. I also nurture my students' self-confidence. With support, my student(s) will be kept interested in learning algebra I concepts and excel in this class.

Contents of CBEST include: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and formulas. Actually problems in the "formulas" category are formuas taken from the previous three categories. Problems from the "algebra" category are taken only from algebra 1. So there are actually three categories in CBEST.

In light of the above categories, CBEST is less complicated than SAT tests because SAT requires more than CBEST. The latter has problems taken from algebra 2 and some introductory trigonometry, which are subjects beyond algebra 1.

I have completed a certificated program at UC Berkeley, Extension, majoring in Teaching English as a Second Language, TESOL. My target language is Chinese. I am a native born Chinese who speaks Cantonese and Madarin, languages that are popular among Chinese. I can also write Chinese fluently and have a Chinese software to communicate in Chinese electronically.

With a certificate for the TESOL program, I should be qualified to tutor students who need support in the English language, or tutor students in their development of the English language.

Math Facts, Basic Operations with Decimals, Fractions, and Percent are basic requirements in middle school math. Measurement, Geometric Facts such as terminologies, area, perimeter, & volume of geometric figures, Probability & Data Analysis/Graphs in Statistics, integers, and an introduction to Elementary Algebra are all important subjects in middle school math as well. Fractions must be mastered prior to Algebra One because there usually has no time in the secondary math curriculum to review fractions thoroughly. Secondary math students often forget how to do fractions. Their vague memory of fractions often prevents them from getting an A in a math class because somehow fractions are used at one time or another.

Success in secondary math depends on its foundation, elementary and middle school math. As an middle school math tutor, I assist students in their mastery of the basic skills, especially in fractions. Once this foundation is firmly laid, secondary math will be easy for them later.

Core concepts in Geometry are deductive reasoning, concepts related to parallel lines, proving congruent & similar triangles, theorems on right triangles & circles, and calculating perimeters, areas, and volumes of geometric figures.

Geometry provides abundant opportunities for students to reason mathematically. It teaches students thinking, communicating, and problem solving skills. Applying axioms, postulates, and theorems in solving problems are practices that help students to become independent learners. In Geometry, the more theorems are stored in the students' repertoire, the easier is the course.

I also nurture my students' self-confidence. With support, my student(s) will be kept interested in learning Geometry concepts and excel in this class.

Piano has been my favorite instrument. I had many years of classical piano training and I have been a church pianist for over thirty years. I have taught classical piano for more than five years to students from third grade through adults. My strength in teaching piano is my ability to capture the interest of my students in the building of their technical skills necessary for playing the piano.

Core concepts in Pre-Calculus include algebra in the coordinate plane, system of equations, roots of polynomials, functions & their inverses such as polynomials & rational functions, exponential & log functions, and an introduction to trigonometry, with some variations among different Pre-Calculus textbooks. It also includes a review of major topics in Algebra II in the beginning chapters.

My strength in tutoring math is two folded. One the one hand, I can put abstract math simple enough for all students to comprehend and on the other hand, I have the methodology to help students, who lack pre-requisites to a math class, to understand on level math concepts.

Content of SAT is taken from three math classes: Basic Math, Alg I, and Geometry, with problems that are more sophisticated than those in the textbooks. The key to scoring high on SAT is to have a thorough understanding of Basic Math, Alg I, Geometry, and apply the student's knowledge to SAT. Quick reviews on the above classes can also refresh the student's memory on math topics covered on SAT and help the student to score high on SAT. Knowing the format of the test is a plus to the mastery.

Excellent Tutor — Nancy is a wonderful tutor. She is extremely patient with my daughter and is always very organized and punctual. Her system of learning is easy for my daughter to understand. We have been working with Nancy twice a week for about a month or so and I am very happy with the results that I have seen in my daughter's understanding of math concepts. She is also very encouraging which my daughter resp ...
