About Christopher

I have recently returned from Mainland China where I was a popular English teacher and also the Manager/Academic Coordinator of the school (see resume) at which I worked.

I taught ages Kindergarten to adult, business English, and TOEFL preparation.

I believe that English is best learned when it is made interesting and fun -- even for adult students. Endless lecturing and written work is not nearly as effective as English learned through Total Physical Response (TPR), meaning that any student learns best when they are on their feet, practicing through competition and entertaining activities/games, and discussing subjects that interest them.

I believe that phonics and especially correct pronunciation are extremely important when learning English. Too many teachers allow poor pronunciation and lazy tense usage to slip by. Having taught in China for so many years, I work very hard to address alphabetical and PINYIN problems that Chinese English teachers rarely correct. I work very hard to help my students speak English in an unaccented and clear way (no matter what region the accent or dialect originates).

I am also very good at breaking down grammar structures in such a way that students quickly become able to differentiate the proper usage of present/past/future and continuous and perfect tenses.

I will be happy to discuss with you my approaches to reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. No two students are the same and everyone has their own goals and areas of focus. I am very sensitive to these needs and readily adapt the lessons to most effectively address student strengths and weaknesses.

I can work on-on-one or develop a plan for small and large groups. The larger the group, the larger the discount!

Whether you are a parent with a child who needs individual study, a high school or university student(s) wishing to improve their study skills, or a group of adults -- beginner to advanced and business English -- I can guarantee you personalized lessons with student success as my number one goal.

PLEASE NOTE: Since I have just returned to America, I have recently begun the background check process, and I will be able to supply the results in the coming weeks. In order to work in China, foreign teachers must already pass both background and health checks.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am extremely strong in helping students improve their overall English competence and can develop lesson plans specifically focused on ACT preparation.

I have been teaching English in mainland China for 3 years.
