I have recently graduated from the University of Mary Washington where I studied the Liberal Arts, focusing on literature, creative writing and philosophy, currently located in the Northern Virginia/Fredericksburg area.

I worked at the university co-leading their summer teaching program for creative writing geared towards middle and high school students, but have also tutored peers in literature, essay writing, logic and philosophy during my time there.

My strengths as a tutor are my ability to come at an idea from several angles, helping to flesh out the topic for students as well as circumventing any difficulties understanding it in conventional ways. I have much patience and critical thinking skills that help me to explain ideas clearly and concisely, in ways that are accessible (this is the standard goal in essay writing, both in English and philosophy).

I have a keen eye for proofreading, grammar, and polished writing, it having been a passion of mine my whole life, even in lower education. I also understand what it's like to be put in a position where one has to cram for standardized tests, and am eager to pass on the SAT learning techniques that have helped me along the way.

Chess

I have been involved in several chess clubs, even starting and leading my college club where players met on a daily basis to practice and engage in the strategy game, always discussing the game following a match. I have used time clocks as well as played unencumbered and encourage players to practice with clocks as it changes technique dramatically. Lastly, I made it a priority to study the games of chess masters, mainly on chessgames.com, paying particular attention to those with commentary from great players, such as Bobby Fisher, attending to the critical thinking side of the game as well as various techniques.

Cooking

I have worked as a cook at a private school, The Holy Cross Academy, making a wide variety of nutritious meals, usually from scratch ingredients. I have been required to instruct new employees of the school in how to quickly and efficiently learn the recipes through memorization techniques and practice using different methods and finding the best that suited their abilities. Lastly, I have worked at both cooking and baking in my private life for many years now and am always testing my limits by trying out new recipes and teaching friends, family and housemates how best to cook them, and most importantly, how to make something bland taste good using an array of spices and seasonings, crucial to the art of cooking.
