As a former Head ESL Tutor at my university, I had many responsibilities. Mainly I focused on the conversational aspect of the English language. When a lot of the students first arrived in New York, they were unsure of themselves. It was my job to work with them on pronunciation and making them feel like a native speaker. Aside from conversation, we also work on grammar and essay writing.

In the summer of 2012, I became TESOL Certified. I took a four-week course in Tokyo and absolutely loved it. While in Tokyo, I taught primarily younger kids. This was much different than the college students I had been accustomed to teaching. After teaching multiple age ranges, I’ve gained an understanding as to how each group learns.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have three years of experience when it come to tutoring ESL students. I worked with international students at my university on reading, writing, and conversation. I also became TEFL certified when I was living in Tokyo, Japan.

Reading

I have always been an advanced reader. In high school I took all advanced English classes. I also have experience teaching students how to read from the ages of 6-22. With these students I worked on pronunciations and sounding out the words.

TOEFL

Part of teaching ESL students involved preparing them for the TOEFL test. Many students I worked with were in America for the first time and needed help with preparing for the test. I made sure to go over every subject and identify their strengths and weaknesses before they took the test.
