You know the saying that computers and music go together in our brains? I don't know what the science says, but for me it certainly seems to be true.

I have been a professional software developer for 10 years and a music composer for 8. Why both? I find it very satisfying using these two different but related areas of my brain. I love the technical problem-solving involved in computer/software work. Plus, it allows me to be selective about which composing and production gigs I take on, and focus on those I truly believe in.

I enjoy teaching because it's fun interacting with people and seeing the unique perspectives and insights they bring to a subject.

Anyway, let's tackle these areas one at a time:

COMPUTERS / SOFTWARE:
I earned a BS in Computer Science and Math in 2004, and freelance as a software developer in industries including health care, real estate, and finance. I specialize in tutoring technologies such as ASP.NET, C#, Javascript, SQL, HTML, and CSS.

I've been geeking out with Windows computers since I was a kid so I'm also adept at teaching everything from general use, maintenance/repair, building machines from scratch, to standard office software like Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

MUSIC:
As a film composer and music producer with 8 years professional experience, I'm also well-qualified to tutor music composition (especially for picture) and audio production.

Since starting my company in 2006, I've scored award-winning feature films, short films and commercials, winning 2 Webby Awards in the process. I've created music or sound on a total of ~100 projects for clients such as CBS, CollegeHumor, ESPN, GOOD, Jason Bateman, JWT, Motorola, MTV, and Samsung.

I've been immersed in music most of my life. Piano and trumpet lessons from an early age led me to perform in a wide variety of groups as I matured musically- jazz bands, salsa groups, chamber ensembles, oldies cover bands, experimental improv groups, and of course rock bands.

I offer film scoring, music production, voiceover and more from my boutique recording studio in East Hollywood.

I know there are other tutoring options out there, so will never bill for a lesson in which a student or parent isn't completely satisfied.

So there you have it. Let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ASP.NET

As a software developer since 2004, I've worked on many ASP.NET/ASP projects in industries ranging from health care to real estate to finance. I've used ASP.NET to create intuitive GUIs, keep track of user state / "shopping carts", and interact with SQL databases.

Whether you're looking for an introduction or want to dig into a specific area I'd love to help.

C#

I've used C# since the beginning of my career as a software developer in 2004. I've written C# code for the health care, real estate, and finance industries. Some of my favorite past projects include developing motion detection & voice recognition tools for a psychology professor, testing tools for an electronic health record company, and web applications (C#, ASP.NET, SQL) for a financial company.

I enjoy how intuitive C# can be compared to certain other languages and would love to help you learn it.

C++

C++ is one of the first languages I learned while earning a B.S. in computer science and math from 2000-2004. It was in this language I learned many of the fundamental concepts, like object-oriented programming, exception handling, etc.

I've written plenty of C++ as a software developer for the past decade. Whether you're looking to learn the basics or dig deep in a specific area, I'd love to teach you.

Composition (Music)

As a composer and music producer since 2006, I've scored award-winning feature films, short films and commercials, winning 2 Webby Awards in the process.

This diverse musical background has given me a rich set of influences to draw from for my compositions.

Making music is the thing I'm most passionate about in life. My approach to teaching is fun and highly customizable depending on your specific interests and background.

Whether you're looking to learn composition for film, new media, stage, etc. I'd be happy to help.

Computer Programming

I earned a B.S. degree in computer science and math in 2004. I've worked in corporate environments (within large teams of developers) as well as growing start-ups (where the team is a lean & mean handful of experts). These diverse experiences in the finance, real estate, and health care industries have made me a proactive and versatile programmer.

Computer Science

I earned a B.S. degree in computer science and math in 2004. I've worked in corporate environments (within large teams of developers) as well as growing start-ups (where the team is a lean & mean handful of experts). One of my favorite parts of computer science is how much you learn with every project. I feel this interest in learning and my real-world experience make me a great CS tutor.

DOS

I grew up using DOS in the 80's but still make use it today. I'm versed in the basics (listing directories, searching & manipulating files, formatting drives, etc) as well as more advanced concepts such as batch files. (When I was a kid I created a fancy system of menus to access my favorite games.. nerd alert!)

Much of what you can do in DOS can be accomplished by "friendlier" graphical user interfaces these days, but I still find it handy to know- especially if you're dealing with a computer problem or fresh installation.

General Computer

I've been geeking out with Windows computers since I was a kid so I'm adept at teaching everything from general use, maintenance/repair, building machines from scratch, to standard office software like Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

General Music

I've been immersed in music all my life. Piano and trumpet lessons from an early age led me to perform in a wide variety of groups as I matured musically- jazz bands, chamber ensembles, oldies cover bands, experimental improv groups, and rock bands. At the University of Iowa I studied classical and jazz music theory, and played trumpet and piano in many university ensembles.

These experiences served as an ideal springboard as I entered the world of film scoring circa 2006. Since then, I've created music for over 100 short films, several feature films, and an iPhone game. My clients include CBS, DDB, ESPN, Jason Bateman, JWT, Motorola, MSN, Nickelodeon, and Samsung.

I love creating, playing, and teaching music. My approach to teaching is fun and highly customizable depending on your specific interests and personality.

Whether you're looking to learn composition, songwriting, theory, production, etc. I'd be happy to help.

JavaScript

For a language that was written in 10 days, it's amazing how ubiquitous Javascript is!

As a software developer since the early 2000's, I've written a lot of Javascript code, in industries ranging from health care to real estate to finance. Given how fast and simple it is, I can understand how it has become a crucial part of modern websites.

I've used Javascript to do everything from input validation to snazzy user interface transitions to loading new content via AJAX.

Whether you want to learn the basics or dig into more advanced topics such as working with ASP.NET I'd be happy to teach you.

Microsoft Access

As a software developer, I've spent a lot of time working with relational databases such as Access. I've also used it heavily over the years to keep track of my contacts in the film industry.

Whether you are brand new to databases or are coming from a different background such as SQL, I'd love to help you learn about Access.

Microsoft Excel

I've used Excel for over 20 years, thus am very comfortable with it. I use it for many projects such as organizing email lists, creating charts, analyzing data and calculating statistics.

Whether you want to get a handle on the basics or get into more advanced concepts like PivotTables & VBA, I'd love to help you learn. I've also recently tutored two students in Excel and earned a 5-star rating with both.

Microsoft Outlook

I've used Outlook extensively over the years as a software developer, especially in corporate environments. I've used it to schedule meetings, keep track of contacts, and even sync with other email services like hotmail.

I am happy to show you the basics or get into more advanced areas like syncing with Exchange or POP3 servers.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I've used PowerPoint for over 20 years, thus am very familiar with it. I've used it mostly for business presentations, with graphics, text, and sometimes even sound effects.

In the mid-2000's I played in a science-themed band which utilized PowerPoint in our live shows. I created elaborate (and factual!) presentations to accompany each of our songs (e.g. a 12-minute PowerPoint about Riboflavin). While something that over-the-top is probably not relevant to most real-world applications, it's safe to say I learned Powerpoint inside and out during that experience ;)

I'd be happy to teach you the basics, dig into more advanced features, or even discuss the art of what I feel makes an effective presentation.

Microsoft Windows

I've been using Windows since version 3.1 in the early 90's (nerd alert!) Knowing it inside and out has been essential as a small business owner, because I am my own tech support.

I take pride in keeping my computers running smoothly, as there isn't much room for "downtime" in the software and music industries.

Whether you'd like to learn the basics or need help tracking down a weird problem (and advice on how to prevent it in the future) I'd be happy to help.

Music Production

I've been producing music professionally since 2006 for films, artists, and bands. These projects have given me experience producing diverse genres of music from classical to jazz to metal to rap. As a film composer, I've scored and produced music for over 100 short films, several features, and an iPhone game. My clients include CBS, DDB, ESPN, Jason Bateman, JWT, Motorola, MSN, Nickelodeon, and Samsung.

Making music is the thing I'm most passionate about in life. My approach to teaching is fun and highly customizable depending on your specific interests and background.

Whether you're just getting started in production or want to dig into a specific topic like side-chain compression or processing vocals, I'd be happy to help.

Piano

I've played piano since the 3rd grade (early 90's) and to this day it's still my favorite instrument to play. I began with classical lessons and by high school and college also became interested in jazz and rock music. At the University of Iowa I studied classical and jazz theory. I've performed with rock bands, oldies cover bands, chamber ensembles, experimental improv groups, and jazz/salsa bands.

I teach beginner and intermediate students of all ages. My approach to teaching is fun and highly customizable depending on your specific interests and personality.

I teach from my East Hollywood home studio or can teach from your home, schedule & distance permitting.

Whether you're looking to learn classical, jazz, rock, or all of the above, I'd be happy to help.
