I studied fine arts with a focus in painting at the California College of the Arts (in SF/Oakland).
I was awarded a study abroad my Junior year to the école des Beaux-Arts (la villette paris ecole d'architecture) in Paris. I studied photography, sculpture, life drawing and Art History in Paris. In 1997 I wrote a grant which allowed myself and several selected students to teach at the Defremery Park Recreation center in Oakland (the original historic Black Panther's home/Now a center for teaching and after school recreation). I also had studies in anatomy drawing, still life, black and white as color, illustration, graphic design, screen printing/printmaking and more.
Upon graduating I worked in a photo lab, a fine art framing studio in the Bay Area, followed with an internship at an award winning graphic design studio in North Carolina. While in NC, I taught art through a state awarded/funded grant art extension program to middle school students in the public school system. There after I wrote and received several grants, one of which allowed me to be a resident artist at the extremely prestigious Headlands Center for the Arts, located in Marin County California (2003).
Since 2006 I have lived in Los Angeles, and continued to pursue exhibiting my art work and painting large scale public murals in all my travels. I recently exhibited a large installation at the South Eastern for Contemporary Art in NC. I have painted public works in NY, NC, many parts of CA, AZ, NV, and Spain. My works are currently in several galleries in the Los Angeles area.
My knowledge is in broad range of mediums.
Acrylic, water color, gouache, oil, spray paint, stencils, screen printing, photoshop, illustrator, composition, drawing, charcoal, pastel, ink, calligraphy, tracing, large scale mural techniques, scaling images to large formats for print or application to painting and collage.
I can teach the basics of perspective, tracing, rendering, creative improvisation, composition and more.
I began the practice of drawing carbon copies of images as early as 9 years old. This natural desire to draw lead into the art of lettering and character art in my teen years which was coupled with formal high school art classes that included fine art drawing/painting, film photography and ceramics. While achieving my BFA I had many drawing related classes that included still life and composition, Black and White as color, live model studies, illustration and more. The most impressionable class was in Anatomy. This class was with one of the foremost anatomy illustrators working today, Vincent Perez. Drawing has been highly ingrained into my practice. I understand it's relevance and range of techniques to which I can teach all levels of its implementation.
I started my formal design lessons with a class called Graphic Design I at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco/Oak. Already having a firm understanding of composition, style, illustration and communication through image, I learned the tools of the trade at that time, which was Quark and all things Adobe. I took an internship with a graphic design firm, in NC, where I learned more on typography, ready for print layouts in brochures, magazines and posters, and the business part of this field. My main goal in teaching with this subject now is an emphasize on the graphics. How to create and communicate and the tools that may be required to get the product out. From turning drawings into billboard sized vector art to clean iconic logos I can teach a wide spectrum of tools. I am open to most all levels and ages of student.
I have over 15 years of work in spray paint, acrylics, watercolor, gouache, and oil mediums. From traditional still life, drawing from the model, to 3-story building murals I have mastered several tools. I also know the importance of experimentation and risk to push medium further. I know how to get a lot of detail and depth out of layers using color and gradients of tone. Through years of photography and designing graphics I have a solid understanding of composition and intention of content. From the young entry level artists to the older well versed artist I have something to teach and share.
I first studied photography my freshman year in high school. It was love at first developed roll of 35 mm. I took a second advanced class in my Senior year of high school. Then off to art school, where I really understood composition, black and white as color, fine tuning of the mechanics of the camera but most importantly the WHY of a photo. I took a class in Paris in my study abroad during my junior year in college. I carried my camera with me at all times from then on and to this day. As the digital world has taken over my concern over the mechanics is less important in terms of what I teach. I focus on the content, the composition and the print. I do not use traditional printing methods, like the gelatin silver process much anymore. Photoshop, illustrator, Aperture/iPhoto are the darkroom tools I can teach with and are most relevant, mixed with a home ink jet printer. I have experience printing with laser engraving, metal, prints on wood and outsourcing Chromogenic Prints as well.
