My name is Richard and I am a graduate of Loyola High School of Los Angeles, Class of 2008 and the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business, Class of 2012.
During my 4 years at USC, I served as a volunteer for USC's Neighborhood Academic Initiative (NAI) which is a rigorous, seven-year pre-college enrichment program designed to prepare low-income neighborhood students for admission to a college or university. I tutored multiple sessions of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Mathematics. This included drafting and implementing a semester curriculum for each of our Saturday Academy sessions, creating and assigning challenging homework that not only teaches students the fundamentals but also encourages critical thinking; opposed to the standard, rogue memorization of mathematical processes.
Upon graduation, I entered into the Banking and Financial Industry serving as a Financial Analyst for Wells Fargo Bank and a Wealth Manager for First Republic Bank. My experience within the financial industry highlighted the importance of "financial literacy" so I returned to NAI with a proposal to teach 9th, 10th, and 11th grade math. The goal was to introduce beginning level finance and real-life applicabilty layered on top of the pre-existing subject requirements. This was a huge success - my students exhibited much higher scores on their exit exams in comparison to their peers who did not take my course. The curriculum lives on within NAI's mathematic department to this day.
My tutoring approach is simple - create successful study habits that enhance a student's ability to be a critical thinker and eliminate procrastination. By staying true to this goal, it reinforces the importance of genuinely understanding the "why" behind the mathematics opposed to memorizing answers, which is what the majority of students do and the reason why they ultimately struggle with higher level mathematics. As a tutor, my goal is to be able throw my students any "curve ball" when asked to solve an equation and because they intuitively understand the "why," they can effortlessly find the solution.
I will assess a students mathematical knowledge and then begin to build with the a strong mathematical foundation. Through weekly supplementary assignments, monthly progress reports which track a students growth, and routinely completing school assignments a week or more before they are due, students will always be confident in their ability to learn new and challenging material, and most importantly, prepared!
To ensure that students have a quite and comfortable study space in which to work with me, I have a tutoring office in View Park-Windsor Hills, where I teach private lessons and group classes. I am happy to travel to another location if that is more convenient for the student.
My strength as a tutor ranges from 6th Grade Math (Ratios & Proportions, Stats & Probability, the Number Systems, Expressions & Equations) to High School Algebra.
I look forward to working with you soon!
