I have tutored high school students in English in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. I have also worked as a proofreader for high school, college, and graduate students, and have taught undergraduate English at UCLA. I graduated with honors from both Barnard College-Columbia University (BA) and the University of York, UK (MA) and I am a Candidate in Philosophy in the English Department at UCLA, currently working on my dissertation for the PhD.
I love working with students. I am deeply invested in developing my students' ability to read and write well, but also their individual commitment to and passion for literature and composition. Please contact me for more details about my teaching experience and methodology.
My BA and MA degrees are in English, and currently I am writing my dissertation on medieval English literature as a PhD student in the English Department at UCLA. I received an award for the best graduate thesis in my MA program and one of my papers was recently selected for publication by a journal. I hold a teaching fellowship in the UCLA English Department and teach literature as well as composition. I have also worked as a reader/grader/editor and as a tutor of English in Los Angeles.
My BA and MA degrees are in English, and currently I am writing my dissertation on medieval English literature as a PhD student in the English Department at UCLA. I received an award for the best graduate thesis in my MA program and one of my papers was recently selected for publication by a journal. I held a teaching fellowship in the UCLA English Department during the 2012-2013 year and taught literature to undergraduates. I taught a range of texts, from Anglo-Saxon poetry to nineteenth-century poetry. I also tutored a high school student in English literature, and we worked specifically on Jane Austen's Persuasion, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, and SAT English preparation.
I worked as a proofreader for high school and graduate students while I lived in NY. I proofread at one point for a graduate student who spoke English as a second language. I completed the training to become a grader and teacher in a UCLA pedagogy course, and I worked as a grader and proofreader for several UCLA undergraduate courses, as well, and have learned to read carefully and offer useful feedback to writers. I have always believed that the more comments, the better, since the student needs to understand why changes must be made. My own writing has received several awards, including the SMFS Graduate Article Prize, and I am confident that my proofreading skills will be beneficial to a range of students.
I have two degrees in English literature and am working currently on my PhD in English. I have taught English literature courses at the college level. However, I have also worked with younger students who require organizational help and homework help. I believe that I have made a difference in the way students approach each discipline by encouraging students to read carefully and thoroughly, to follow instructions, to keep copies of their work, and to listen attentively. I also believe that teaching study skills has a long-term effect on the student, as it offers strategies rather than simple answers that have implications on a student's methodology in all areas of study and on his or her performance in high school and college. By focusing on process, rather than product alone, I have helped a number of students improve the way they work, think, and perform in and out of the classroom.
