Hello to all my new students!

I'm passionate about teaching. I sincerely care about the growth of my students, and I do all I can to guide their growth in the smoothest, fastest, and most enjoyable way. In this way I make sure to provide top-quality lessons to my students.

I specialize in (1) teaching languages (English or foreign) and (2) tutoring for the SAT, ACT, TOEFL, and other school tests.

I attended Yale University and studied five languages there (Japanese, Chinese, French, German, Spanish). From this experience I have come to understand the most effective and efficient methods of learning a language. I apply these methods to all my language lessons. I teach to improve the four basic skills of a language: speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. To develop these areas I use model conversations, newspaper articles, short stories, and audio/visual media in my lessons. Moreover, In college I majored in Linguistics, and I therefore also possess a great deal of technical knowledge on how languages work. I use this technical knowledge to help my students understand the grammar of their target language, as well as to help them develop the proper pronunciation of the language.

For my test-taking students I use SAT, ACT and other model exams to train problem-solving strategies, to improve test-taking speed, and to nurture general logic-based thinking skills. With my training my students learn to think in a more organized way, and they come to understand a few simple keys to acing their tests.

I have been teaching for five years. Much of this experience was in Japan, where I taught English and test-taking skills in one-on-one lessons to over 100 students. Over these years I have developed solid confidence in my teaching skills. (1) For my language students I promote a balance between input and output: I provide enough grammar/pronunciation/vocabulary instruction so that the student knows how to use the language, but I also provide plenty of opportunities to speak and use this knowledge, so that the students can experience the joy of applying the material that they worked so hard to learn. (2) For my test-takers I provide a methodical problem-solving method that is easy to understand, and that my students can use themselves when they take their tests.

Moreover, I adjust the pace and content of each lesson to the needs of each individual student. Just let me know what you want; I'm always sensitive to your needs.

I have high standards for my students and I always challenge them to grow in new ways. And yet, I'm a casual, easy-going person, and I create a fun environment during all my lessons. With my fun and top-quality teaching methods, I have helped many students achieve their goals, and with these methods I hope to help many more students to come!

I look forward to teaching you!
