Hi everyone! Welcome to my awesome tutoring page!

I'm a young, enthusiastic professional musician who just loves to teach. I've been playing piano for 20 years now, songwriting/composing for 12 years, and playing guitar for 10 years. I've had wonderful results with all 50+ of my private students, in each of these subjects, and I place the success with my individualistic approach to teaching.

There is absolutely no cookie-cutter method for making someone love music. I was put through several of these methods and I almost quit - thank goodness my parents forced me to continue! I ended up taking studying with a young teacher who inspired me into loving the instrument. I haven't stopped since, and I realized something from that experience: most people are not going to learn to play an instrument if they don't have the desire to do so. I find the balance between learning and having fun, which has resulted in students who continue to practice and play even when their parents aren't forcing them to. Naturally, this leads to life-long musicians. I'm not even going to go into all the benefits of a life filled with playing music...but it's pretty staggering.

I graduated cum laude from University of Southern California in 2013 with a degree in Popular Music Performance (with an emphasis in songwriting) and studied guitar, piano, music theory, and ear training. I'm currently composing music for indie films and video games, transcribing sheet music, songwriting, teaching as much as I can, and making lots of music with my band, Bear Attack. Several of my songs have been featured on television (including the hit ABC Family show, Pretty Little Liars) and my music has over a million views on YouTube.

I advertise myself as a musician who can teach popular music (as in relevant pop music that's currently playing on the radio) because it's surprisingly difficult to find a teacher who can provide that for a student. I can teach classical and jazz as well, since I studied both subjects from my youth through college. I can teach sight reading to those who have a very difficult time with it, and that's actually become a specialty of mine lately. I had a tough time learning when I was younger, but I had good ears, so reading was very frustrating for me. I approach sight reading with the experience of how I finally connected the dots as a kid. Theory or ear training lessons are something I'm very good at - I was the top of my class in both subjects through my 4 years at USC.

Other passions of mine include reading great books, playing basketball with friends, winning at board games, and going to concerts.

That's most of what there is to know about me - now I'd love to hear how I can help you! I want nothing more than to help you or your child tap into the everlasting passion of playing music. It is absolutely never too late, and certainly never too early!

Eric’s subjects

Ear Training

I was taught Aural Skills for 3 years at USC (graduated 2013). I tested out of the first semester of Aural Skills, and every semester after that I was at the top of my class. I have great ears that help me grasp music in a vivid way, which I then try to elaborate to students.

I have been playing guitar for ten years. I usually play acoustic guitar (as I do in my band), but I can play electric guitar as well. I studied for 2 years at USC (graduated 2013) under Tim Kobza, an established guitarist and musician in the LA scene.

Music Theory

I studied Music Theory at USC for 4 years. I am trained in the fundamentals of music theory as well as specifics in classical, jazz, and popular music. I was at the top of my class in all of my music theory classes and understand it on a fundamental level.

I've been playing piano for 20 years. My first lessons happened when I was 3 or 4, and I continued all throughout elementary, middle, and high school, as well as all through college. Piano is my primary instrument, and I am studied in pop, jazz, and classical music. I tend to compose music on piano as well.

Sight Singing

Sight-singing is a specialty of mine. I can teach singing steady pitch and control over one's voice. I sang in choir from middle school all the way through college, and was apart of Minnesota's All-State Men's Choir during high school (the audition process included rigorous sight-singing exercises). I have sang professional recordings by sight singing.

I am primarily a songwriter. Several of my songs have been featured on broadcast television and I graduated in Popular Music Performance from USC with an emphasis in songwriting. I also received a songwriting scholarship (the Richard Carpenter scholarship) my junior year of college.
