Hello, my name is Hannah, and I am very excited to be a tutor for WyzAnt! I decided to join WyzAnt as a tutor because I truly enjoy teaching and working with students of all ages in a one-to-one environment; this way, I can cater to and meet the needs of each student individually. I am originally from Brooklyn, NY. I graduated from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts with my BA in theater in '09 and my MS in communications in '10. Going forward I will be pursuing my second master's in social work.
Some of my strengths include (but are not limited to): English/reading/writing/grammar/proof-reading; Computer skills/MAC/Windows/Apple iPhone, iPad, iPod/Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook/Pages, Numbers, Keynote/Quickbooks/Photoshop/Adobe Acrobat Pro/Bento/iPhoto/Social Media (Facebook, etc); Elementary & Middle School math, history, and science. Additionally, I have a strong theater & digital photography background.
I look forward to hearing from and working with you in the near future!
I have been using Photoshop for all of my photo editing needs as well as for graphic design. I have worked with versions starting at CS3 through CS6. I began using Photoshop 6 years ago. Having had wonderful professors who taught me the ins and outs of photo editing on Photoshop, I prefer using it over Lightroom & Aperature.
I went to hebrew school for 16 years. I was awarded honors in the New York City Bible Contest during hebrew high school. I am knowledgeable in Jewish Studies & History (contemporary and biblical). I have been a leader in Jewish activities since I was 15 years old, including active members of the USY board for my local chapter; I have done a lot of work through Jewish social action groups and committees.
My father taught me to cook & bake at a very young age. During middle school and high school I catered cocktail parties for friends and families, which included layer cakes & desserts made from scratch, pasta, meat, chicken, and fish dishes, and homemade cocktails. Over the years I have had many experiences teaching recipes to family and friends, as well as helping to fix kitchen disasters. I am constantly experimenting in the kitchen, and modifying recipes. At the moment, I am working on perfecting my cinnamon roll recipe.
I have been working with elementary-middle school aged students for several years now. My patience and empathy allow me to successfully work with students when they begin to feel frustrated, angry, and/or upset while doing math. I do not give up on students--I make sure that they understand the work they are doing before moving on to the next level. I am very dedicated to the small successes of children so that they feel empowered in the classroom.
I am passionate about inspiring and motivating students. English has always been a subject where I've excelled, but still struggled. While I have always been a strong writer, I spent many years learning the necessary skills to become a writer with a critical eye. I have spent a lot of time working with high school and college-aged students on their writing. Along with my writing skills, my personal strengths include patience, empathy and dedication. With these tools I do not let my students give up when they begin to feel angry, frustrated, and/or upset because they find the material too difficult or do not understand it. I make sure that my students understand the work at hand before moving on. I want my students to feel confident in the classroom and excited to pursue reading and writing.
I have been using computers from a very early age. I grew up using Macs since 1993. After becoming fully proficient with Macs, in high school I was required to use Windows operating systems. I know the ins-and-outs of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. As former Apple employee and technician, I am adept with hardware and software troubleshooting for mobile devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod). I have been tutoring people on general computer issues for a few years now. I am proficient with social media (Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, blogging, etc).
I have been using MAC OS for 23+ years. I worked in Apple retail doing tech support and lessons (in addition to sales) for 1+ years. I know how to maintain and operate the OS: gestures, system preferences, troubleshooting, etc. Furthermore, I am well versed in MAC specific applications, including (but not limited to): iPhoto, iTunes, Pages, Keynote, Numbers, iCloud, iDVD, Bento, Quicktime, and much more. Also, I am very knowledgeable with Apple devices (iPod, iPhone, iPad), mobile device operations, troubleshooting, applications, and how to use the devices most effectively in one's life. Moreover, I tutored former customers on pretty much anything MAC & Apple mobile device related.
I work with Excel on a regular basis. I know how to use the formulas & spreadsheet aspects of Excel. I also know how to use Excel to make presentations and instructions. I have been actively using Microsoft Excel (or Numbers for Mac uses) for the last 13 years.
I regularly use Microsoft Outlook on MAC & PC. While working for Apple retail, I tutored many people on using Outlook, as well as, troubleshooting & resolving significant issues with the program. I know how to sync with other devices. I know how to use special features, such as Mail Merge, stationary, and other functions of the program that people are not familiar with or even aware of.
I have been using Microsoft PowerPoint for the last 13 years. I am extremely competent with creating presentations with animation, videos, galleries, etc. I used PowerPoint (Keynote for Mac users) for various classes from science and math to english and marketing. I believe in the power of effective visual presentations and PowerPoint can be an essential tool when taught correctly.
I have used PC for 13+ years. I know how to do basic troubleshooting. My high school assigned PC laptops to all students for everyday use and integrating state of the art programs into our studies. I know all of the basic functionalities to teach a beginner. I am also well versed in different programs, internet use, social media, and much more.
I have been using Microsoft Word for the last 13 years. Before Word, I used Corel WordPerfect. MS Word is a great writing tool and contains a lot of functions users are not aware of. Word is a great tool for any professional or non-professional. You can make flyers, write a book, design a newsletter or brochure. I like the ease of Microsoft Word and its user friendliness.
I have been a digital photographer for the last 5 years and have been doing professional work for the last 4 years. I know how to explain light metering, F/stop, focusing, positioning the subject, etc. I do all kinds of photography: head shots, stills, street candids, etc. I am very passionate about photography and photo editing. I prefer digital to film because I am not limited in my shooting and I can see where I need to make adjustments shot to shot.
I am an excellent public speaker. I have been acting for 16+ years and majored in theater for my BA. I participated in Shakespeare and oratory competitions. I have taken classes specifically in public speaking and voice & speech. I am equipped with the tools to teach how to feel comfortable and effective while speaking to a group of people. I am also involved in improv at The Groundlings School in West Hollywood.
When I was growing-up, I hated to read. My parents and my teachers made me read and I was very obstinate about following their orders. However, in 5th grade I read "Where the Red Fern Grows" and "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" and I began to read as much as I could.
I am passionate about inspiring and motivating students, through reading. Reading opens your mind to worlds beyond one's grasp: the adventures you go on, the characters that impact you, and the tales that can change your life forever.
Additionally, reading helped widen my vocabulary, improve my grammar, and amp up my writing skills.
